Virginia Tech on Nov. 2 at War Memorial Pool. In the first head-to-head meeting between the rival schools since 1998, the No. 17 Cavalier men downed Tech, 134-102, the 18th-ranked women topped the Hokies, 135-108. Freshman Sara Smith (McGaheysville, Va.) led Tech in a losing effort with a pair of event victories for the Hokie women. Tech s men s team was led by Phil Smith (Richmond, Va.) and Zac Czaplicki (North Haven, Conn.), who both earned event victories. Second Time is a Charm For the second time this season, freshman Sara Smith has been named ACC Performer of the Week. The Mc- Gaheysville, Va., native posted event victories in the 100 free and 200 IM for Tech. Her time of 50.86 in the 100 was her third NCAA B qualifying standard of the year. Sara Smith Smith s 2:04.62 in the 200 IM broke a War Memorial Pool record. Lunn leads the way Senior Laura Lunn (Regina, Sask.) became the first Hokie to earn automatic qualification to the NCAA Championships. The diver s score of 274.65 in the first meet of the season qualified her for the Zone Diving Laura Lunn Championships in Lexington, Ky., on Mar. 10-12 this season. Lunn s best dives of the season came three weeks ago when she scored 269.17 on the 1-meter and 276.71 on the 3-meter at NC State. Saving his Best Sophomore Pete Cancila (Broomall, Pa.) has been coming into his own recently. The 6-foot-3 sprinter recorded his best times in the 50 and 100 freestyle events in Tech s dual meet with No. 17 Virginia. Cancila, who also holds Tech s second-best time in the 100 butterfly, is a big Pete Cancila key for the Hokie men, who will look to bounce back this weekend. Nike Cup history This will mark the sixth straight season, and eighth overall, that Tech has competed in the prestigious Nike Cup in Chapel Hill, N.C. The event usually brings in teams from the top conferences in the country. In the Hokies history at the event, the women have placed as high as second three times (2000, 2001, 2002), while the men have placed third three different times (2001, 2002, 2004). Gone for the Holidays The Virginia Tech swimming and diving teams will enjoy two weeks of holiday training in sunny Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The Hokies annual trip during winter break will run from Dec. 28-Jan. 13, and will springboard the team into their first two events of the 2006 calender year; at UNC Wilmington (Jan. 14) and at East Carolina (Jan. 15). A New Home On Aug. 16, 2005, The Town of Christiansburg and Virginia Tech Athletics announced that they had reached an agreement for the use of the town s new aquatic center. The facility, which is expected to be completed by the summer of 2007, will house Hokie swimming and diving home meets beginning in the 2007-08 season. Oh Captain, My Captains Virginia Tech has named its captains for the 2005-06 season. For the men s team, senior Phil Smith (Richmond, Va.) and junior Gus Calado (Recife, Brazil) will serve as this year s team captains. The women s team will be led by seniors Juliana Daniell (Atlanta, Ga.), Emily Guschke (Colonial Heights, Va.) and Claire Jakabcin (Falls Church, Va.). Last Season Virginia Tech continued its assault on the national swimming and diving scene with impressive finishes in its first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Hokie women placed fifth at the ACC Championships and 30th in the NCAA Championships last season, while the men were fifth in the ACC during the regular season and tied for 32nd in the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Jessica Botzum (Raleigh, N.C.) became Tech s premier firstteam All-American, finishing seventh in the 200 breaststroke at the NCAA Championships. HEAD COACH NED SKINNER Ned Skinner, opens his eighth year at the helm of the Virginia Tech men s and women s s w i m m i n g a n d diving teams with a team that turned heads in their first year in the Atlantic Coast Conference. In 2005, his teams began their assault on the ACC, each garnering fifth place at the end of the regular season. At the conference championships, the women placed fifth while the men finished seventh. He coached Virginia Tech s only swimming first-team All-America, in freshman, Jessica Botzum, who placed seventh in the 200 breaststroke at the NCAA Championships. He and his fellow staff saw senior Kevin Furlong earn honoroable mention All-America honors with a 14th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke at the NCAA Championships. Skinner came to the Hokies after serving four years as the director of competitive swimming at William & Mary. In his last season at W&M, he coached the Tribe women to a second place finish at the ECACs, while the men were fourth of 40 teams. Also, Skinner was named ECAC Coach of the Year. The W&M men s team posted a fourth-place showing at the 98 ECAC Championships and finished seventh in 1997. Before his stint at William & Mary, Skinner was the head coach and aquatics director at Central Connecticut State University for four seasons. A 1989 graduate of Louisiana State University, Skinner was captain of the 1988 squad that captured the SEC Championship. Skinner is married to the former Allison Cox. They have a one-year old daughter, Samantha. OKIE AWARDS National Swimmer of the Week Sara Smith... Oct. 19 ACC Women s Performer of the Week Sara Smith... Oct. 17 Sara Smith... Nov. 7 Page 2
