The following programs are part of the Ephrata Recreation Center s Summer Municipal Recreation Program, which is sponsored in full by Akron Borough, Clay Township and Ephrata Borough and partially by Ephrata Township. These programs are free for residents of the fully sponsoring municipalities. Ephrata Twp residents and nonresidents must pay the class price listed with each program. Classes are held at the Ephrata Community Pool and are taught by qualified Water Safety Instructors and trained aides. Lessons include safety skills along with swimming skills. Level 1 - Minnow : Water Exploration & Fundamental skills- For the beginner, includes water exploration, submerging head, floating and introduction to freestyle and backstroke. Level 2 - Guppy : Stroke Development - Introduction to treading water, diving, elementary backstroke and breaststroke. Level 3 - Sunfish : Stroke Improvement- Increase distance swimming and introduction to sidestroke. Level 4 - Shark : Stroke Refinement Refinement of all strokes and diving along with increased endurance. Level 5 - Whale : Endurance Increased endurance swimming. Introduction to butterfly and flip turns. Level 6 - Dolphin : Lifeguard Readiness Fitness swimming, diving and perfecting all strokes. Must complete 500 yards continuous swimming to pass this level. Ages 5-15. Classes are daily for a two week period Registration is limited to one session. Sew Creative Weaving Weaving is a traditional art activity that most children enjoy. Boys and girls will spend time weaving together and experimenting with a variety of yarns, collage strips and other raw materials. Weaving is fun, it s challenging and it enjoys a long, historic tradition across world cultures. During this camp we will make our own looms to weave on out of a variety of materials and do some fun weaving with nature. Come on out and join the fun! Each day will focus on playing a different game such as dodgeball, kickball, wiffleball team Handball and Capture the Flag. Camp will meet at the baseball fields behind the Ephrata Middle School. Campers should come with a water bottle and be ready to play! Aug. 7 - Aug. 11 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. Players entering grades 4-7 Camp Price $40 Ephrata Twp Price $20 Freestyle & Pop Dance Camp (Under the new direction of Ken Brennan, Certified Dance Instructor) New You ve probably seen Freestyle dancing in music videos and concert performances and with dance teams and cheerleaders. Now your children can experience the fun for themselves and get a great aerobic workout at the same time with this camp. Sessions include warm-ups, stretching and learning choreography, leading up to a performance on the final day. Participants should wear shorts and a short-sleeved shirt or athletic clothing that can stretch. Sneakers and socks are required. No sandals or bare feet. Street Hockey The Summer Municipal Street Hockey Camp will feature organized games and instruction at the street hockey rink in Akron. Players need shin guards and a mouth guard and are welcome to bring their own sticks and goalie equipment. Equipment will be available for those needing it. July 17-21 9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. entering grades 1-2 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. entering grades 3-5 Class Price $40 Ephrata Twp Price $20 New Cooking Camp Join Maria, Pepe s Pizza owner, for a fun week of cooking everyone s favorite meals. There will be a different dish each day, such as pizza, pasta, sandwiches and more. July 31 - Aug 4 Ages 10-12 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Camp Price $40 Ephrata Twp Price $20 Craft Camp One of our most popular camps, Craft Camp will feature a different take home project each day. Campers use their own creativity on these fun to make crafts. Camp is held at the Rec. July 17-20 9:00 a.m. - 10 a.m. ages 9-12 10:15 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. ages 6-8 Camp Price $40 Ephrata Twp Price $20 Art Camp Using paint, drawing, sculpture and collage, camp will focus on young artists individual creativity and exploration. Participants will connect different media and subjects while developing finesse and an eye for their own art. Camp is held at the Rec. July 10-13 9:00 a.m. - 10 a.m. ages 9-12 10:15 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. ages 6-8 Camp Price $40 Ephrata Twp Price $20 Give Me 5 A little of this, a little of that, Give Me 5 features a different activity each day. Fitness, crafts, fun with food and more. This camp is a great handson alternative to TV and video games. Aug. 7-11 8:30 am.-9:30 am. or 9:45 am.-10:45 am. Theater Camp In partnership with EPAC s Center Stage Summer Theater Camp, professional instructors and artists will help campers explore their talents and interests in the performing arts. Young artists will be exposed to all of the disciplines that go into a theatrical production in a fun, nurturing environment. Camp meets at the Playhouse in the Park. June 26 - June 30 9 a.m. - noon ages 6-9 12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. ages 10-14 Camp Price: $70 Ephrata Twp Price $35 Resident price: free Rhythmic Gymnastics Camp This class will introduce campers to core elements of both Artistic and Rhythmic Gymnastics including tumbling, dance, rope, hoop, ball, ribbon, and beam. Campers will have a chance to demonstrate their skills on the final day of camp. Taught by USA Gymnastics Certified Coaches. June 12 - June 16 9:00 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. Ages 6-9 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Ages 10-14 Class Price $40 Ephrata Twp Price $20 ***Registration Information*** Registration forms for these programs must be submitted (be sure to use the Summer Municipal Registration form, not the regular Rec Center registration form) to the Rec Center by 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 21. A registration form appears on the back page of this booklet. Additional forms may be picked up at the Center or faxed. Forms may be returned by mail, dropped off or faxed. The Center s fax number is 738-1462. On Monday, May 22 Summer Municipal Programs will be randomly filled with the submitted forms. A separate form must be filled out in its entirety for each participant in each program. If a fee is required it must accompany the registration in the form of a check or money order (no cash). Make the checks payable to the Ephrata Rec Center. If participants are registering for more than one class requiring a fee, a separate check or money order must accompany each individual registration. Walk-in registration for programs remaining open will begin on Thursday, May 25. Registrants will be notified only if a class is full and their registration cannot be accepted, otherwise if you do not hear from us you are in the class. Boys & Girls Lacrosse Camp This program for boys and girls in grades 2-7 will introduce young athletes to one of the nation s fastest growing sports. Lacrosse combines the speed of soccer and the strategy of hockey for an exciting, fastpaced game that kids of all athletic abilities can enjoy. Directed by the Ephrata Boys Lacrosse Staff. Equipment is provided. Camp will meet at the EHS turf field. June 12 - June 15 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Entering grades 2-7 Camp Price $40 Ephrata Twp Price $20 Beginner Soccer Skills Camp Get your beginner player ready for the upcoming season at the Beginner Soccer Skills Camp. Under the direction of coach Deb DeHaven, camp will cover basic individual and team fundamentals with an emphasis on fun and sportsmanship. Campers need shin guards, water bottle and a #3 ball. Camp will meet at the baseball fields behind the Ephrata Middle School. A Certified Personal Trainer will focus on leg strength and power with appropriate technique training to best utilize your strength and power development. Variety of drills and exercises designed for sport specific speed will be incorporated, in addition to pre/post nutritional information, stretching and active recovery. Beginner - Emphasis is on basics including forehand, backhand, serving, rules and scoring. Each class will include skill work and games. Ages 8-12 beginner 9 :00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Mon - Fri. This is a fun camp that introduces campers to the basic skills of volleyball including passing, serving, setting & hitting. This camp for 7-12 year olds is a full week of fun and exercise. A new activity each day, sessions will include: circuit fun, obstacle course team challenge, muscle mania and boot camp. If yes, explain The summer recreation programs consist of a variety of activities including games, contests, special events, and field trips, along with activities specific to each individual program. There are certain inherent risks found in these programs including the possibility of cuts, abrasions, bee stings, bruises, and broken bones. There is also the hazard of inclement weather and thunderstorms. In case of medical emergency, every effort will be made to contact the parents or guardian of the child. In the event parents or guardian cannot be reached, a parental or legal guardian signature at the end of this waiver will give permission to the physician selected to hospitalize, secure proper treatment for, and order injection, anesthesia, or surgery for the above mentioned child.
