PASSPORT Rome Campus University of Mary UNIVERSITY OF MARY ROME CAMPUS

T he classroom is only the beginning of the education of University of Mary students in Rome. Through rigorous study, the experience of a foreign culture, and new-found friendships, University of Mary students will understand themselves more clearly, and the heartbreaks and joys of humanity more deeply. They will learn to serve society as leaders in service of the truth with greater wisdom, justice, and self-sacrificing love. Study and travel in Italy! UNIVERSITY OF MARY IN ROME Italy STUDY. LEARN. WORSHIP. TRAVEL. Andiamo! UNIVERSITY OF MARY ROME CAMPUS STUDENT HANDBOOK Learn from a mix of European and U-Mary faculty for a local flair with the comforts of your home campus. Classes are held Monday through Thursday, allowing you to experience all that Italy and Europe have to offer. You are still a University of Mary student, so your tuition, room and board go to Italy with you!

Roman Forum The U-Mary Rome Campus Students stay at the Handmaids of Charity guesthouse, located on the edge of Rome. All rooms have a private bath and internet access is available. Study areas, outdoor recreation grounds, classrooms, and a chapel are all located on-site. The campus is located 20 minutes from the Vatican and downtown Rome. For pictures and more detail on the guest houses, visit www.alcasaletto.com.

What happens when I m there? The program features specialized courses in the liberal arts, covering topics such as history, theology, art, architecture, and music. There will be rigorous classroom days coupled with excursions into the countryside, including visits to the Benedictine heritage sites. Students also have the opportunity to start a course on the U-Mary Bismarck campus and then travel with their professors for courses specifically developed for the Rome campus. Classes are Monday through Thursday, allowing students time to experience all that Rome, Italy, and Europe have to offer. Students will gain an in-depth experience of the city of Rome. They will have special access to the hidden excavations under St. Peter s Basilica, the treasures of the Vatican Museum, and an audience with Pope Francis. St. Peter s Basilica

A Day on the Rome Campus Wake up and get ready for a great day. You walk downstairs to the common dining room where all of the guests at Al Casaletto enjoy a simple Italian breakfast of bread, jam, and a delicious cappuccino. Classroom work. Today in class, you learn about the decay and fall of the late Roman empire. You pay close attention, because tomorrow your class will visit the Roman Forum, where you will come face-to-face with what you discussed in class. At 1 pm, class is dismissed! The class moves to our private dining room to enjoy an authentic Italian meal prosciutto e melone, pasta alla norcina, roasted chicken and rosemary potatoes, and gelato for dessert.

Collosseum An afternoon trip with friends. With your snacks and backpacks in hand, you and some friends hop on one of the busses that runs from the Al Casaletto area into the city center. On the bus, you overhear a conversation between a mother and a little boy and you understand more Italian than you expected.

St. Peter s Square Taking in the sights and sounds. You and your friends find the churches that contain the paintings you learned about from Pascaline, who teaches art at the Rome campus and also at the Louvre in Paris. You take a drink at one of the many small fountains that run throughout the city of Rome, still working through the ingenuity of the ancient Roman aqueducts. You and your friends settle onto the steps of a church in a nearby piazza to do a bit of reading for class the next day.

Making new friends. On the walk back to the bus stop, you and your friends run into a group of American students from another university. They tell you that last weekend they took the train to Milan and saw the Duomo and Da Vinci s The Last Supper and that you simply can t miss it. They give you information about which train they took, as well as the hostel where they spent the night while they were there. Beautiful Roma Enjoying the evening. You hop on the bus and head back to the Al Casaletto neighborhood. Before returning to campus, you notice a few of your classmates enjoying gelato at a local shop and join them. After a long day, you fall exhausted into bed, wondering what surprises the next day will hold!

U-Mary Students in Paris And, don t forget those weekend trips... Thursday afternoon: You and your friends pack carry-on bags, grab your wallets, and hop on a train to Paris. While there, you take in the Louvre, a riverboat tour of the city, and, of course, the Eifel Tower (which looks amazing during an early- December snow shower). On Sunday evening, you spend the train ride back to Rome making plans for next weekend. Athens, maybe? Or how about Venice?

U-Mary Students in Venice

The BIG Questions How long can I study abroad? Students have the opportunity to study in Rome for a full semester or for a 5-week term in May. Yes, you do have to come home after your term is over. Who gets to go? Students are eligible to study in Italy after a semester at the university, and must be in attendance the semester immediately prior to participating. There are 22 spots available per semester, so let your advisor know early if you re interested. Only students in good academic standing are eligible to apply. Students should have a lively interest in the liberal arts and the intellectual tradition of Western civilization. Preference is given to sophomores and Catholic Studies students. Per imparare di più (to learn more): Call: 701-355-8030 or 800-288-6279 E-mail: marauder@umary.edu Visit: www.umary.edu/italy What is the cost? The cost of room, board, and tuition is the same as our Bismarck campus. All scholarships and financial aid apply to the cost of the program. Students are responsible for round-trip airfare, personal spending money, and some planned travel excursions. Why study abroad? The University of Mary is committed to ever higher levels of intellectual and cultural engagement for its students and advocates for leadership development in a global environment. The goal is for students to have a rich experience of other cultures and ways of life. This is a unique opportunity for them to experience great beauty and wonder firsthand in the cradle of Christian faith and Benedictine values. Students will come home with an entirely new vision for life and its purpose.
