BUC HAR EST CITIES. REBORN. 27 02 18

THIS IS WHY Romania and its cities are in transition. We are looking to the future and taking significant steps for the improvement of our living, yet regions in Romania need help to grow and develop into modern, sustainable, strong 21st century communities. Not only regular citizens, but also stakeholders are interested in this process Cities of Tomorrow is the embodiment of their desire and offers a platform for exchange of ideas, concepts and know-how between the public and private sectors, with the ambition of creating the proper context for concrete action leading to tangible results. WE DO IT

THIS IS WHAT The central theme of last edition was focused on the competitiveness of cities/regions in which we live and work. This year we want to shift the discussion towards making cities/regions more attractive through urban revitalization & reconversion of existing assets. We strongly believe that even one single well thought-out revitalized element of an abandoned area contributes to the attractiveness and has the potential of becoming an economic magnet. Therefore, the panels of the conference will deal with approaches to industrial areas and to regions with touristic and cultural potential. In an effort to productively debate these aspects, the event will reunite representatives of the central and local administration, professional and academic experts, representatives of the business environment, experienced moderators and brilliant speakers. WE WANT TO DO

THESE ARE OUR Corina Crețu, European Commissioner for Regional Policy, is responsible for identifying how EU structural and investment funds can be better channeled towards creating jobs and growth, as well as monitoring the effectiveness of the spending programs. Moreover, she is engaged in identifying how the EU funds can help establish a European Energy Union and complete the digital single market. Her speech will focus on the importance of the cooperation at national level between all involved actors, leading to the improvement of the urban areas and increase of the country s attractiveness. Moreover, she will emphasize the need of an integrated strategy at regional level. *to be confirmed KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

THESE ARE OUR Oliver Weigel is the Head of the Urban Policy Division of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety. After having been responsible for several major projects (i.e. Leipzig s bid for the new BMW plant, the elaboration of the first urban strategy for urban rightsizing in Germany in 1998 and the cities national bid for hosting the 2012 Olympic Games), Mr. Weigel became Head of the Olympic Planning unit in 2003. Since 2006 he is working for the Federal Government. He also is a member of the German Academy for Urban and Spatial Planning and is actively participating in several international projects. He is experienced in partnerships on urban development between the public and private sector in Germany and will talk about enhancing and developing cities to become engines of economic activity and investment magnets. *to be confirmed KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

THESE ARE OUR Dipl.-Ing. Hans-Jürgen Best 1993-1996 Planning office manager City of Oberhausen 1996-1998 Chief Planning Officer City of Oberhausen 1998 Chief Building and Planning Officer City Essen 2005 Divisional Management Board Planning 2010 City Director of the City of Essen and Divisional Management Board Planning City of Essen Located in the heart of the Ruhr Metropolis, the city of Essen offers numerous cultural, scientific and economic highlights. World Heritage Zollverein, University of Duisburg-Essen, headquarters of leading German companies or Messe Essen shape the face of the city. And Essen continues to evolve: with the university quartier/ Green Center Essen, attractive housing projects on the Sea of Baldeney and the Ruhr, with the waterside district in Essen-Altendorf or the development of the Kreuzeskirch quarter in the city center, the city has set accents that have been noted nationally. *to be confirmed KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

THIS IS HOW Similar to Cities of Tomorrow #5, this edition will continue the World Café concept, a concept which allows participants higher involvement by giving them the possibility to leave with concrete ideas and solutions from the interactive round tables, so that once they get home they can implement information and know-how in their own projects - as acquired at Cities of Tomorrow. The 8 round tables will be a good opportunity to discuss practical and applied different topics/projects depending on the timelines and necessity of the topic. Moderators will come both from the private and public sectors, depending on the chosen project or theme. Afterwards, the conclusions will be discussed briefly during the final panel, which serves the purpose of a kick-off for the follow-up brochure of the event, consisting of the ideas of Cities of Tomorrow, identified problems and solutions, suggestions and insights. WE ARE GOING TO DO IT

THIS IS HOW Energy efficiency & energy management Financing & EU funds City Governance/Digitalization/City Information Platform Mobility Circular economy Tourism & Lifestyle Reconversion & revitalisation of industrial sites Planning legislation WE ARE GOING TO DO IT

THIS IS HOW The event will also host a market place in the hotel foyer. Here, sponsors will have the opportunity to present solutions and technologies designed to modernize and streamline the city and regions, while representatives of local authorities (regional development agencies, county councils, municipalities) will present concrete projects, which they want to complete and for which they seek support of private actors. Projects will be selected after a competition, and only successful candidates will have the chance to be present in the market place. YOU CAN BENEFIT

THIS IS WHY Cities of Tomorrow is already at its sixth edition and has proven itself as Romania s top forum for business, architecture and administration. The experience and know-how of the organizers, gathered during years of activity on and with relation to the Romanian and the German markets, are the foundation of the event structure, the chosen topics and the promoted projects. Encouraging the sustainable development of the country, promoting measures for it to become more attractive for new and smart investments and stimulating its competitiveness are paramount factors for us.
