Washburn University Faculty Salary Analysis 2012-13 Office of Institutional Research Washburn University May 15, 2013

Washburn University Faculty Salary Analysis 2012-13 This report provides an overview of Washburn University s 2012-13 average faculty salaries. Washburn salaries are compared with faculty salaries nationally, regionally, and with the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) institutions. Washburn Law School faculty are excluded from the analysis, unless it explicitly states they are included. Summary Average faculty salaries at Washburn improved in 2012-13, outpacing inflation and salary increases nationally. The Washburn Board of Regents was able to allocate a 2.95% pool for merit salary increases in 2012-13, the first increase since 2008-09, resulting in an overall salary increase of 4.4%. For the prior three years, average salaries at Washburn had declined overall and for the ranks of professor, associate professor, and assistant professor. A comparison of Washburn s 2012-13 average salaries with the six Kansas Board of Regents institutions shows Washburn s average salaries at the top three ranked levels (professor, associate professor, assistant professor) are lower than the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, and Wichita State University and higher than Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, and Pittsburg State University. Washburn s average salary as a percentage of salaries for the KBOR institutions has improved from 2011-12. Washburn s 2012-13 average salaries remain lower than the national average for public master s level institutions, but Washburn has gained some of the ground lost since 2007-08. Washburn s average salary for the three top ranks is now 6.5% lower than the average for public master s. This is a marked improvement from one year ago when Washburn s average salary was 10.2% below. The National Picture Nationally, according to the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), average salaries of full-time faculty rose by 1.7% from 2011-12 to 2012-13, a rate equivalent to inflation but slightly lower than the prior year s 1.8% increase. This is the first time in four years where faculty salaries did not lose ground relative to inflation AAUP attributes this to the low rate of inflation, and not to an increase in salaries. AAUP states although the 2007-09 recession is S:\IR\Faculty & Staff\2012-13\Salary Analysis.docx Office of Institutional Research, Washburn University 05/15/2013 1

over for the U.S. economy as whole, the recessionary period for higher education continues with some signs of very slow recovery in full-time faculty salaries. 1 For public master s level institutions, average faculty salary increases of 0.8% were lower than the national average, increasing by 0.6% for professors, 1.0% for associate professors, and 1.3% for assistant professors. Salaries increased by 2.0% for instructors. 2 AAUP reports higher salary increases for continuing faculty with a 2.4% overall increase at public master s institutions with increases of 1.9% for professors, 2.6% for associate and assistant professors, and 3.2% for instructors. Washburn University (Table 1; Chart 1) The Washburn Board of Regents was able to allocate a 2.95% pool for merit salary increases in 2012-13, the first increase since 2008-09. Table 1 shows Washburn s average salaries from 2008-09 to 2012-13 by rank for full-time faculty including and excluding law school faculty. The table also shows annual percent changes in salaries by rank for all faculty and for continuing faculty, as well as the change in salaries over five years. Chart 1 graphs Washburn salaries for the five years. In 2012-13, 75.1% of the 273 full-time Washburn faculty were in tenure-track positions, distributed fairly evenly across the top three ranks (professor, associate professor, assistant professor). Washburn s 2012-13 average faculty salary was $68,847 (including law school faculty); when law school faculty are excluded, the average salary is $61,914. The average salary for faculty in tenure-track positions (excluding lecturers and law school faculty) is substantially higher at $67,606. Washburn s faculty salaries increased overall from 2011-12 and 2012-13 by 4.4% with increases of 6.8% for professors, 1.7% for associate professors, and 5.2% for assistant professors. For the five-year period, 2008-09 through 2012-13, average salaries increased overall by 1.5%. During this period, salaries increased only in 2008-09 and 2012-13; there were decreases in 2009-10, 2010-11, and 2011-12. There are, however, differences by rank. 1 Here s the News: The Annual Report on the Economic Status of the Profession, 2012-13, Academe, American Association for University Professors (AAUP), March-April 2013. 2 Although institutions report data for lecturers, AAUP does not specifically report data for this category; salary data for lecturers are included in the calculations for all ranks. S:\IR\Faculty & Staff\2012-13\Salary Analysis.docx Office of Institutional Research, Washburn University 05/15/2013 2

Salaries increased over the five years by 2.6% for professors and by 7.3% for assistant professors. Salaries for associate professors declined by 4.9% over this same period. Comparison of Washburn with KBOR Institutions (Tables 2, 3; Chart 2, Graphs A-C) Table 2 compares Washburn s 2012-13 faculty salaries to salaries at the six Kansas public fouryear institutions: University of Kansas (KU), Kansas State University (KSU), Wichita State University (WSU), Emporia State University (ESU), Pittsburg State University (PSU), and Fort Hays State University (FHSU). The average salaries for all ranks are weighted. Salaries for two earlier years (2008-09 and 2010-11) are provided in Table 3 to show how salaries have changed over five years. Graphs A-C in Chart 2 display the salary trends over five years, 2008-09 through 2012-13. Washburn salaries for instructor and lecturer ranks are combined in this section to make Washburn data comparable to the ranks used at the KBOR institutions. For 2012-13, Washburn s weighted average faculty salary for all ranks was $61,914. The comparable average salary for the entire Regents system was $76,214, making Washburn s average salary 18.8% lower. In 2011-12, Washburn s average salary was 21.4% lower than the average of the six KBOR institutions. Excluding KU and KSU, Washburn s average salary for all ranks is 4.0% below the average salary ($64,520) of the remaining four KBOR institutions (WSU, ESU, PSU, and FHSU). Washburn s average salary is higher than the average salary at ESU and FHSU and lower than the average at WSU and PSU. The average salary of the top three ranks (professor, associate professor, assistant professor) is also provided in Table 2. When compared with the six KBOR institutions, Washburn s average salary of $67,633 is 16.2% below the KBOR average of,702. When salaries for KU and KSU are excluded, the Washburn average salary is 1.1% lower. Washburn s average salaries for professors, associate professors, and assistant professors are higher than the average salaries for these three ranks at ESU, PSU, and FHSU. Comparison of Washburn with Master s Level Institutions (Tables 4, 5; Chart 2, Graphs D-F) This section of the report compares Washburn s faculty salaries with other master s level institutions. Average salaries in this section are from AAUP, which has been collecting salary data annually from colleges and universities since the late 1970s and publishing it in the magazine, Academe. In this year s AAUP report, 1,142 institutions are represented including 379 classified as IIA master s level, the category in which Washburn is classified. Note AAUP reports average salaries for the ranked positions of professor, associate professor, assistant professor, and instructor; the overall average salary also includes other ranks such as lecturer. S:\IR\Faculty & Staff\2012-13\Salary Analysis.docx Office of Institutional Research, Washburn University 05/15/2013 3

Table 4 shows average faculty salaries by rank in 2008-09, 2010-11, and 2012-13 for Washburn and: (1) all public and private master s level institutions; (2) public only master s institutions; and (3) public and private master s institutions by region of the country. Kansas institutions are reported in the West North Central region. Washburn s 2012-13 average salaries are below the average of all master s and all public master s institutions for all three faculty ranks (professor, associate professor, and assistant professor). Washburn s average salaries are higher than the average salaries in the West North Central region for the ranks of professor and assistant professor but lower for the associate professor rank. In the late 1990s, the Washburn Board of Regents committed to making faculty salaries competitive with other public master s level institutions and reaffirmed this goal in Washburn 150 Forward: A Strategic Plan for the University s Future, which was approved in April 2010. Theme I of the Strategic Plan calls for superior and rigorous liberal arts and professional academic programs offered by distinguished teaching faculty to be achieved by recruit[ing] and retain[ing] superior faculty by emphasizing compensation, support and professional development strategies. This goal is to be met, in part, by continuing efforts to make salaries competitive with a goal of achieving parity with other public master universities. Progress was made between 1999-00 and 2006-07 in achieving Washburn s goal to have faculty salaries competitive with other public master s level institutions. However, beginning with the downturn in the economy in 2007-08 and continuing through 2011-12, Washburn lost ground in achieving parity with the differences in salaries increasing each year. As of 2011-12, Washburn s average salary for the top three ranks was 10.2% below the national average for public master s institutions. See Table 5. In 2012-13, the tide has changed. Washburn was able to provide a 2.95% merit pool for salary increases while the average salary increase for public master s institutions nationally was only 0.8%. With this increase, Washburn has regained some of the ground lost since 2007-08 and Washburn s average salary for the three top ranks is now 6.5% lower than the average for public master s. This is a marked improvement from one year ago, 3 with improvements in all three ranks as noted below. Washburn s average salary in 2012-13 for full professors was $87,015 compared to $88,988 for public master s level institutions. Washburn s average salary for full professors is now only 2.2% lower than the average salary at public master s institution. Approximately 3 In 2011-12, Washburn s average salary was 10.2% below the average of public master s level institutions. S:\IR\Faculty & Staff\2012-13\Salary Analysis.docx Office of Institutional Research, Washburn University 05/15/2013 4

$97,000 would be needed to bring salaries for Washburn professors to the 2012-13 average for public master s level institutions. Washburn s average salary in 2012-13 for associate professors was $63,187 compared to $71,343 for public master s level institutions. Washburn made some ground between 2011-12 and 2012-13 in bringing salaries for associate professors closer to the average of public master s, with associate professor salaries now 11.4% below the average. A 12.9% increase or $506,000 would be needed to bring salaries for Washburn associate professors to the 2012-13 average for public master s level institutions. Washburn s average salary in 2012-13 for assistant professors was $57,572 compared to $61,041 for public master s level institutions. Average salaries for assistant professors are now 5.7% below the average of public master s level institutions. Washburn s 2012-13 average salary for assistant professors is now closer to the average of public master s institutions than it has been since this tracking began in 1999-2000. A 6.0% increase or $232,000 would be needed to bring salaries for Washburn assistant professors to the average for public master s level institutions.
