Boise State is demonstrably on the move. Chronicle of Higher Education Fiesta Bowl wins in just nine seasons means Boise State University has graduated to the rankings and ratings of the Power Five conference teams. We have successfully leveraged the national spotlight on the transformation of Boise State s academic mission and role as a growing metropolitan research university. 2 BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY
We ve worked so closely with the state s fast-growing software and technology industries that a slate of gifts from some of Boise s leading software companies will help double the number of sought-after graduates from our Computer Science Department. But we didn t stop there. The entire department is moving across the Boise River into a state-of-the-art building in the heart of downtown Boise, just steps away from dozens of the very companies that are clamoring to hire our skilled, innovative students as interns and employees. Our one-of-a-kind Venture College pairs our most entrepreneurial students with more than 300 of the state s top business and community leaders in a rigorous noncredit program aimed not at just teaching students how to start a business, but at actually getting their business or nonproit idea off the ground. The program has sparked multiple businesses, attracted angel capital, and the model is expanding to other parts of Idaho served by Boise State. Boise State is advancing to that space the space that American higher education must occupy to serve the needs of future students, future economies and future communities. When you try to evaluate how this university will be positioned in the decades to come, you shouldn t look just at where we are today, but at the way we got here, and at the way we are pressing ahead. Dr. Bob Kustra, President Gordon Jones, the Brown and Stanford man we recruited from Harvard to run our College of Innovation and Design, is a hockey player. They have a saying in that sport: You never skate to the puck. You skate to where the puck is going. BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY 3

Boise State is creating a university for the future of the American West, not one mired in the economy, the structure and the academe of the past. I like going to places that are trying to make history. Our College of Innovation and Design lured the inaugural director of the Harvard Innovation Lab to Boise State to lead our efforts to reimagine teaching, learning and research for the modern economy and the ever-changing demands on our graduates and partnerships. The college is leading the way on developing the kinds of responsive ideas that bend and break traditional disciplinary lines and delivering the skills and competencies students need. Boise State students get the chance to learn from distinguished visiting faculty and lecturers including historian Douglas Brinkley and authors like Salman Rushdie, Margaret Atwood and Denis Johnson, who joined our highly touted MFA in Creative Writing program for Fall 2015. A 20-year partnership between Boise State and one of Idaho s industry leaders, Micron Technology, continues to drive the College of Engineering to be one of the West s most innovative engineering programs. During a recent visit to Boise State s New Product Development Lab, which works with students, entrepreneurs and business leaders to prototype and test new components or products, President Barack Obama praised Boise State s culture of innovation. The work you do here is one of the reasons why Boise is one of our top cities for tech startups, the President said. That means we shouldn t just be celebrating your work, we should be investing in it. In fact, Boise has a rich and productive history of innovation and entrepreneurship. Corporate giants like Albertsons, Boise Cascade, the JR Simplot Co., Morrison-Knudsen and Micron were ignited by small teams of innovators many years ago and Idaho s capital city and the university that serves it have continued that spirit. Today, as Boise gains accolades for being a thriving technology hub with a virile start-up culture, Boise State continues on an unrivaled trajectory that has created new academic and experiential learning opportunities for its students, research that can improve lives and change the world, and connections to the marketplace that spur economic development and job creation across our state and region. Facilities like our multidisciplinary Environmental Research Building and the Micron Business and Economics Building provide undergraduate, master s and doctoral students and their award-winning faculty state-of-the-art laboratories, computer facilities and the kinds of space and technology that will best prepare them for tomorrow s workplace. You may be surprised to hear that Boise State was named AMONG THE NATION S TOP PRODUCERS OF FULBRIGHT SCHOLARS. But that is just one of many signs of the university we have become. As Idaho s largest university and its fastest-growing research enterprise, Boise State recently joined a consortium of research universities including Purdue, Rice, Georgia Tech, University of Michigan and Texas A&M in a $5 million foundation-funded effort to create longterm, hands-on applied research projects that will ensure undergraduate and graduate students get unprecedented experience tackling real-life problems in real time. Our Professors of the Practice program invites accomplished business, scientiic and artistic leaders to bring world-class experience and excitement to Boise State students. Our current cohort includes NASA astronaut Steve Swanson, who worked with students while he was the commander of the International Space Station, and artist Benjamin Victor, the only living sculptor with two works of art displayed in the National Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol. Our innovation doesn t stop at the edge of campus. Boise State s online undergraduate programs, for example, rank among the top 100 in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report. Our online graduate programs in education and nursing each rank in the top 50. 10 BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY
Though well known for our recent $70 million expansion of athletics facilities, Boise State has devoted more than $200 million over the same decade to expanding academic, residential and other studentcentered facilities across campus. Our rise in athletics is matched only by our transformation in the classroom, in the research lab and in the community. BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY 11
