JOB DESCRIPTION POST: REPORTS TO: Senior Registered Nurse/Quality Assurance Role Inpatient Unit Manager DATE: November 2017 BASED AT: St Joseph s Hospice, Ince Road, Thornton, Merseyside Job Purpose To work as a senior nurse ensuring the service delivers high quality, evidence based specialist palliative care to patients and their families with care, compassion and dignity. To assist the IPU manager, in the operational running of the Hospice. To have responsibility, for quality assurance across the Hospice and to act on any concerns/issues raised with professionalism. Tasks and Responsibilities Clinical Ensure the Hospice delivers 24 hours palliative care in an effective, safe, responsive and well led manner in conjunction with the IPU Manager Ensure a detailed knowledge of every patient on the units in order to ensure that palliative care is delivered in line with individual needs Be responsible for the safe management and security of the whole Hospice site in the absence of the IPU Manager In the IPU Manager s absence, take responsibility for admissions in accordance with the Hospice Policy Act as a resource, advisor and role model to junior colleagues in relation to clinical issues in the assessing, planning, delivery and evaluation of care Work closely with the nursing, medical and wider healthcare team to ensure that care provision on the IPU is consistent with best practice and of consistent high quality Page 1 of 6

Management Provide clinical leadership for the Registered Nurses and care assistants Demonstrate effective leadership skills and in conjunction with the IPU Manager conduct regular team meetings, supervision meetings and annual appraisal reviews for nursing and administrative in-patient unit staff Ensure any return to work meetings following sickness are carried out in a timely manner. Observe nursing and care assistant team members in the Units, interacting with patients and families to monitor professional, hospice based and best practice care standards In conjunction with the IPU Manager and RNs agree a plan for the delivery of clinical palliative care that sets clear targets and quality standards that comply with CQC regulations Regularly discuss and review with the IPU Manager the nursing and administrative requirements to ensure adequate levels of skill mix to meet operating requirement and CQC regulations Ensure safekeeping and confidentiality of all unit and patient care records in line with the Data Protection Act, Access to Medical Records Act and Hospice policy on confidentiality Assist the IPU Manager to provide accurate data to the Senior Management team on the activities of the IPU in order to optimise strategic planning and communications with commissioners Ensure the Units are clean at all times, liaising with the IPU Manager and where necessary directing the housekeeping team to minimise hospice acquired infections Monitor quality of data and record keeping in the patient s notes. Liaise with patients families to address and advise on nursing care, clinical practice and patient-related enquiries Ensure the full induction of new staff and assist in the process of familiarising them with the methods, procedures and values of the Hospice. Ensure all volunteers who work within the unit are supervised and trained for their role. Foster and maintain effective communication within the Clinical team, across the Hospice departments and with external stakeholders Attend MDT meetings alongside the IPU Manager to provide expert opinion on patient and clinical care issues Record relevant personnel data e.g. annual leave, sickness records, meeting notes Page 2 of 6

Attend any disciplinary or grievance hearings in conjunction with Human Resources when necessary Quality, Governance, Safety and Compliance Assist the IPU Manager to manage the department s quality and standards of service ensuring patients, staff, volunteers and the public reside in a safe, effective, responsive, caring and well led environment Ensure that the IPU upholds and can evidence compliance with the requirements of regulatory and commissioning bodies such as Care Quality Commission, Local Intelligence Network, Local Authority & Clinical Commissioning Groups etc. Promote and uphold the principles of clinical and information governance Investigate any errors/issues and refer to safeguarding as appropriate and also complete CQC statutory Notifications as required. Refer patients for Deprivation of Liberties as required-again ensuring all relevant paperwork completed, i.e. Mental capacity Act, Best Interest Meeting. Finance Monitor and review expenditure regularly Manage donations safely as per policy and procedure Agree and arrange the purchase of medical consumables and agree the sourcing and funding of specialist one-off equipment in discussion with the IPU Manager.
