Proposals for paper presentations, workshops, interactive sessions, posters/exhibitions are invited to the 2014 ALASA International Biennial Conference at Walter Sisulu University. The conference will address a range of critically important themes in the various fields of language, translations and literatures. Plenary sessions will include presentations by some of the world s leading thinkers in the humanities, as well as numerous papers, workshop and colloquium presentations by academics and researchers. The purpose of the conference is to attract scholars and researchers from a variety of disciplines and to bring together a cohort of established and emerging researchers in one assembly to deliberate on topics related to the theme and sub-themes. CONFERENCE THEME Reclaiming our Heritage through Language The above title will embrace contributions from a wide spectrum of research on African languages and cultures, from a historical perspective (reflections on what has been achieved so far towards the development of African languages and cultures) and future prospects (projections on how current research can impact on future developments). Sub-themes include but are not confined to the following areas: Language planning and policy in Africa Language and Education Language and Business and Economics Language and Human Resources Language in Law Language in society Language and ideologies Language and gender Language and the media Language and health Multilingualism, multiculturalism and globalisation General linguistics Historical/ Comparative linguistics Phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, discourse analysis, pragmatics Computational linguistics Human language technology (HLT) Lexicography and terminography Translation studies Page 2 of 8

CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS Four conference workshops will be organised during the afternoon (14:00 17:00) of Tuesday, 01 July 2013. Proposals for workshops (500-800 words) should include: 1. The title of the workshop 2. A brief description of the specific issues that the workshop will address 3. The reasons why the workshop is of interest to conference delegates 4. The names and affiliations, postal addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses of the organising committee of the specific workshop which should consist of at least two academics knowledgeable in the field, coming from different institutions 5. The name and the e-mail address of the member of the workshop organising committee designated as the contact person 6. A summary of the intended call for participation in the specific workshop 7. An estimate of the approximate audience size 8. A list of audio-visual or technical requirements and any special room requirements The workshop proposers will be responsible for the organisational aspects (e.g. preparation of workshop call, distribution of call (via the ALASA Organising Committee), review of abstracts, notification of acceptance, submitting accepted abstracts to main conference organising committee).
