Welcome to Patrick AFB Patrick Air Force Base lies on the east coast of Central Florida, three miles south of Cocoa Beach, in Brevard County, in a region known as the Space Coast for its proximity to the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS). In terms of driving, Patrick Air Force Base is about 190 miles north of Miami via Interstate 95; 855 miles southeast of Nashville, Tennessee; 1,220 miles southeast of Chicago, 1,150 miles east of Dallas; 700 miles east of New Orleans and 1,320 miles southeast of Oklahoma City.
POPULATION The 45th Space Wing has 15,537 personnel, according to its FY16 Economic Impact Analysis. That includes 3,951 active-duty and reservist/air National Guard personnel, 5,391 civilian and contractor employees, and 6,195 family members who work on and around the base. More than 66,534 veterans live in Brevard County, according to the 2015 U.S. Census. BASE SIZE The 45th Space Wing has more than 30 major mission partners and tenants at Patrick AFB and CCAFS. ECONOMIC IMPACT Patrick AFB s total impact on the local economy totaled about $1 billion in fiscal year 2016, creating 4,229 indirect jobs in Florida.
Base Information Patrick AFB opened in 1940 as Banana River Naval Air Station, a U.S. Navy airfield. It was deactivated in 1947 and placed in caretaker status until 1948, when it was transferred to the Air Force and became Patrick Air Force Base. Patrick is home to the 45th Space Wing and the world s premier gateway to space. The wing s personnel are responsible for delivering assured space launch, range and combat capabilities for the nation. The wing is organized into four groups to accomplish its mission. The 45th Mission Support Group, with units at Patrick AFB and CCAFS, provides quality mission support to assure success of the wing s launch, range and expeditionary operations and provides comprehensive support to the wing s mission partners. The base serves a varied population, which includes Air Force, Navy, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, active-duty and reserve personnel, DOD civilians, retirees and their eligible family members. The 45th Operations Group operates the Eastern Range, located at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and launches space vehicles for the Department of Defense, NASA, the United States and international commercial customers. The 45th Launch Group conducts mission assurance on launch vehicle and spacecraft processing from flight hardware arrival through launch. The 45th Medical Group provides ambulatory medical service to active duty and their enrolled members. It also provides dental medical service to active duty only.
History The 45th Space Wing s evolution into the World s Premier Gateway to Space and the Spaceport of the Future on Florida s Space Coast began in the 1940s when what s now known as the Eastern Range was used as a home for Army missile testing. The 45th Bombardment Group (Light) was activated in January 1941 to conduct patrols and search missions off the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts until its deactivation in December 1942. The group s four squadrons went on to serve with the 26th Antisubmarine Wing and other bombardment groups later in World War II. The 45th Medical Group provides the following patient care services: pediatrics, limited gynecological services, immunization, general dentistry, physical therapy, optometry, mental health, substance abuse, family advocacy, laboratory and pharmacy.
