Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Faculty of Engineering : This year on September, 27 th, 2016, Faculty of Engineering UPM had organized a science fair event for school kids. The IEEE CAS Society Malaysia has joined the Robotic Club UPM to open the booth at the event. The student volunteers introduced the school kids about robots and demonstrated how solar cells work to power the robot. Through this activity, they also took the opportunity to introduce school kids to the earliest world known scientists Hebattullah bin Malaka Al-Baghdadi and Muhammad ibn Musa al-khwarizmi (Father of Modern Algebra and Algorithm). The theme for the IEEE CASS booth activity was Science is worth exploring! Go out there my little sunshine! With the biggest dreams in the world!. These school kids had shown great interests in science while doing activity. The science fair is definitely a good platform for kids giving them a great opportunity to learn about science outside of books and homework. Nurul Amziah Md Yunus, PhD. May 31st to June 1st 2016, IEEE CASS Malaysia together with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Robotic Club and a local school, Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Baru Bangi Jalan 2 organized a LEGO Robotics workshop intended for school students of the age group 7 to 12 years in conjunction with the public school holiday. A total of 50 students from a few states in Malaysia, mostly from neighboring states, Putrajaya and Selangor joined the 2 days workshop. The objectives of this workshop are to provide opportunities and exposure to the school students on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through robotic design and to infuse enthusiasm and interest in invention and innovation. The workshop starts with an interesting introduction to the LEGO Mindstorm NXT programmable robotic kit, followed by a few short training modules on creating robot of several categories namely soccer robot and obstacle avoidance robot. On the second day of the workshop, students were grouped into smaller groups and given opportunities to compete in a soccer robot match and obstacle avoidance robot competition, putting their knowledge and creativity to the test. It was interesting to see how these school students work together coming up with interesting solutions for the matches and competitions. Top 3 groups received prizes from IEEE CAS Malaysia. The school students are very pleased with the workshop, thanks to the team of cheerful and engaging workshop instructors. To IEEE CAS Malaysia delight, majority of them are excited to join this workshop in the future.
