San Francisco, California DAY 1 Fly to Depart from San Francisco and make your way to today. The stunning beauty and friendly people alone are worth a visit! The city proper is home to over 2.6 million people. Taipei, New Taipei, and Keelung together form the Taipei Keelung metropolitan area with a population of 6.9 million. They are administered under three municipal governing bodies. "Taipei" sometimes refers to the whole metropolitan area, while "Taipei City" refers to the city proper. DAY 2 Welcome to Taipei After you arrive early this morning, the group will be met and transferred for check-in at your local hotel with some free time to relax and lunch by individual arrangement. Early check-in will be confirmed for your convenience. All travelers will gather this afternoon for a welcome briefing with your Taiwan guide and receive further information on the program. Enjoy a welcome dinner this evening at Hsinye Restaurant (Taiwanese cuisine) in the Taipei 101 Building. Taipei 101, formerly known as the Taipei World Financial Center, is a landmark skyscraper in Xinyi District. The building was officially classified as the world's tallest in 2004, and remained such until the completion of Burj Khalifa in Dubai in 2009. DAY 3 Cultural Exploration Please Note: Breakfast is included daily at your local hotel. Begin your explorations of Taipei with a visit to the Martyrs Shrine and the National Palace Museum. Built in 1969, the shrine covers a large area and is famous for its grand architectural style, similar to the Taihe Dian of the Imperial Palace in Beijing. The museum dates to 1925 and houses what is reported to be the world s largest collection of priceless Chinese cultural and art treasures spanning China s 5,000-year history. After lunch at the Yuan Yuan Restaurant, explore the Confucius Temple, famous for its southern Fujian-style ceramic adornments. Stop to shop at Jianguo Holiday Flower and Jade Market before you finish up your afternoon with a visit to Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall. The monument lies in a park at the east end of Liberty Square. The structure is framed on the north and south by the National Theater and National Concert Hall and is a dedication to the former president of the Republic of China. Taipei DAY 4 Professional Exchange Professional members of the program will interact with local medical professionals today. The goal of the program today is to get an overview of health care in Taiwan. During your visit, meet physicians, nurses, allied medical professionals and administrators to learn about the delivery of health care in Taiwan: current issues and problems and how the country is addressing them; and engage in conversations about areas of special interest, both in the public and private sectors. Journey Mission: The primary objective for this journey is to understand how Taiwan delivers healthcare to its diverse populations. You will learn about current efforts to reduce infant mortality rates, to reduce morbidity and deaths from infectious diseases, and to prevent ill health due to poverty and malnutrition. Guest program Today accompanying guests will visit Yehliu Geopark s unique geological formations including the iconic "Queen's Head" before heading to the famous Jiufen market to enjoy its wonderful street food. After a light lunch visit the Pingxi District, best known for its natural beauty and must-see events, such as the famous annual Sky Lantern Festival. This evening the group will take part in a private cooking lesson at a local restaurant. You will also have the chance for dinner after your four-course class on the Chinese dishes. Guest program Accompanying guests will visit the Lungshan Temple this morning. Lungshan is a Buddhist temple and was built in 1738 by settlers from Fujian in honor of Guanyin. It served as a place of worship and a gathering place for the Chinese settlers. After lunch at a local restaurant, the group will take part in a community activity. Arrangements will be made to visit a local non-profit or similar organization for the chance to give back. More details will be provided closer to travel regarding this opportunity. DAY 6 High Speed Train to Kaohsiung After hotel checkout, make your way to the Taipei railway station for your high-speed train to Kaohsiung (2-hour journey). You will be met upon arrival by your local guide and transferred to lunch at a local restaurant before heading to the hotel for check-in. This afternoon the group will explore the Fokuangshan Buddhist Monastery. Located in the Fokuangshan Mountain, this is the largest Buddhist Monastery in Taiwan. Buddhism is one of the major religions in China and your visit today will allow you to not only enjoy the beautiful mountain views but also learn about religions practiced in Taiwan. Dinner will be provided at a local restaurant. Overnight: Howard Plaza (or similar) DAY 7 Professional Program Today, finish your professional exchange with colleagues at a local hospital, university or clinic. This will include a morning and afternoon meeting. Lunch will be provided at a local restaurant. Day Trip to Tainan DAY 8 Cultural Exploration Depart the hotel in the morning and explore Tainan, the oldest city in Taiwan. It was the site of the main Dutch colony on the island, and after their defeat it became the country s first capital under Chinese supervision. It was the capital of the island from 1662 until 1887 when the capital made a brief appearance in Taichung before settling in Taipei. Stops today will include the Confucius Temple, Koxinga s Shrine, Chihkan Tower, and AnPing old Fort. Tainan Confucius Temple is the first in Taiwan honoring Confucius. Koxinga Ancestral Shrine is a family shrine built in West Central District in 1663 by Zheng Jing, to worship his father Koxinga. Chihkan Tower, also known as Fort Provintia, was constructed by the Dutch in 1653 and was originally used as the administration center during the Dutch s occupation. Anping Fort is built during the Dutch occupation in 1624 on the foundations of the Dutch stronghold named Fort Zeelandia. That fort was the anchor point of early settlements in Tainan for both the Dutch and the Chinese, and much of the settlement s history lies in Anping s old streets surrounding the fort.
