Agenda ROTC History LTC Objectives What to Expect Qualifications Prior to Arrival Scholarship and Benefits What happens after LTC Questions and Answers Pizza 2

The History of ROTC The National Defense Act of 1916 established ROTC. The purpose of the program: securing reserve officers for the military forces of the United States. By autumn of 1916, 46 universities had ROTC programs. By 1940 ROTC had expanded to 220 institutions. ROTC was once again suspended during World War II, but provided the Army with 100,000 junior officers when mobilization started. In 1971, Congress expanded the scholarship program, increased the stipend, and authorized additional training opportunities for cadets in the summer Airborne School, Cadet Troop Leader Training, and Ranger School. In 1986 US Army Cadet Command was created and transformed ROTC into a centralized command which further increased ROTC s ability to produce lieutenants of high quality. In addition to providing the bulk of the Army s second lieutenants, ROTC provides corporate and government leadership to the nation. Countless ROTC graduates leave the Army and provide invaluable leadership in the corporate world and at all levels of government. 3

What LTC will do for you Learn Leadership Skills: Problem-solving Decision-making Communication Teambuilding Personal Growth: Strengths and Weaknesses Confidence and Adaptability Improve Overall Fitness: Physical and Mental 4

Four Phases of LTC Soldier First Phase- a basic "introduction to the Army" to teach cadets skills and knowledge necessary to successfully participate in the next three phases. Specifically, cadets learn military customs and courtesies such as saluting, how to wear the uniform and how to march. Warrior Leader Phase- training covers adventure training, which builds both cadet self confidence and unit esprit-de-corps. Focus is on individual skills as a precursor to learning group dynamics. Cadets learn basic military skills in order to function as a small group member. Bold Leader Phase- the course's "Capstone Exercise". Cadets are exposed to squad level operations where cadre assesses the cadet's leadership ability in a field environment. The Field Training Exercise is intentionally tough and introduces the element of stress. Throughout the exercise cadets encounter physical and mental obstacles that challenge them as a person, cadet and leader. Future Leader Phase- the final portion of the cadet's training introduces them to the social aspect of the Army. Final briefings are conducted as well as a Family Day in conjunction with a cadet run graduation ceremony. 5
