Secretary s Office Project Commerce Staff UNC Institutions Commerce executed a statewide traveling tour called the NC Competes for Jobs tour. Included 20 stops, touched over 2,200 people and all 100 counties. Several staff, including the Secretary Western Carolina University, Appalachian State University, & several community colleges hosted events Dates Most of 2016 Outcomes Were able to explain what Commerce does, how we differ from the EDPNC, talk about rural economic development and workforce development, talk about where Commerce was going, what our goals were as a department, and how we could work with these communities to make NC better 11
Secretary s Office Project Commerce Staff UNC Institutions General Assembly commissioned an economic feasibility study (Food Manufacturing Task Force) to evaluate food manufacturing s potential in North Carolina John Skvarla, Cecilia Holden, Susan Fleetwood NC State University, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Dates 2015-2016 Outcomes Produced strategic report in 2016; recommendations currently being implemented 12
Rural Economic Development Description Commerce Staff UNC Institutions Dates Broughton Study: General Assembly commissioned a study and re-development plan for the approximate 54 acres of the old Broughton Hospital Campus and the contiguous state-owned properties of approximately 800 acres located in Morganton, NC Patricia Mitchell and Dave Efird (Legal Counsel) UNC Chapel Hill School of Government (Development Finance Initiative) 2014 to current Outcomes Produced the Reuse Study of the Historic Broughton Campus. DHHS, DOA, DOC and Town of Morganton and County of Burke are collaborating on implementing the study 13
Rural Economic Development Description Commerce Staff UNC Institutions Provide 50-60 facade improvement design plans annually for designated Main Street communities; provide 4 upper story redevelopment plans annually; and provide educational programs on the economic impact of downtown retail layout and design David Peoples, COO UNC Greensboro, School of Interior Architecture Dates March 2016-March 2019 Outcomes Since March, UNCG has provided approximately 4-5 facade improvement designs per month, designed 1 upper story redevelopment plan, and presented an educational program to 70 Main Street directors 14

Science, Technology & Innovation Description Commerce Staff Governor s Innovation-to-Jobs (I2J) Working Group and University Innovation Council (UIC) John Hardin (Executive Director) & Scott Doron (Associate Director) UNC Institutions All Dates 2015-2016 Outcomes Developed action plans to strengthen NC s innovation ecosystem and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of process for commercializing university innovations; recommendations currently being implemented 16
Science, Technology & Innovation Description Commerce Staff UNC Institutions Energy R&D Cost-Sharing Program John Hardin (Executive Director) All eligible; NCSU and NC A&T were recipients of grants Dates 2011-2012 Outcomes Provided cost-sharing funds for university R&D proposals to the U.S. Department of Energy that have a statutory requirement for cost-sharing 17
