Biographical/Historical Note Josiah H. Goodwin, born in Hancock County, Ohio, in 1841, first enlisted as a private in the 21 st Ohio Infantry at the outbreak of the Civil War. He was involved in the Siege of Corinth in 1862 and soon after became a fifer in the Mississippi Marine Brigade, a Union Army unit part of the U.S. Ram Fleet that patrolled the Mississippi River. A house painter before and after the Civil War, Josiah Goodwin married Margaret Howard and died in 1918. William Wiseley, Ph.D., a former U.S. Marine and captain in the Korean War, taught economics and history at Harvard. Wiseley s great aunt, Maude Goodwin, was the daughter of Josiah H. Goodwin. Scope and Content Note The collection consists of two handwritten diaries of Josiah H. Goodwin kept during his service in the Mississippi Marine Brigade from January 1, 1863 to June 2, 1864. He writes about his service aboard various U.S. steamers along the river in Louisiana and Mississippi, and discusses the Vicksburg Campaign of 1863 and the Red River Expedition of 1864. Describing raids near Vicksburg, Goodwin details the suffering of the locals as Northern forces swept through the city. Other topics he covers include soldier animosity toward the officers, suspicion of army doctors, and the interplay between white Union regiments and those of the United States Colored Troops. He also provides a look at the day to day life of a sailor and his impressions of the people and wildlife of the lower Mississippi Valley. Also included in the collection are the research materials of William Wiseley, PhD, compiled while studying the diaries. These include bibliographical notes, biographical information on Goodwin, photocopies of Goodwin s service record, photoprints of portraits and other Civil War images, and his annotated transcription of the diaries. Series Descriptions Series I, Josiah Goodwin Diaries, 1863-1864 Josiah H. Goodwin s handwritten diaries were kept during his service in the Mississippi Marine Brigade (U.S.) from January 1, 1863 to June 2, 1864. He discusses activities from his daily life as well as participation in military actions aboard the U.S. Steamers Diana, Autocrat, and Baltic. For example, he recounts amphibious landings, skirmishes on land, raids of Vicksburg, and the harsh treatment of locals along the Mississippi River. Goodwin describes the surrender of Vicksburg and the continued fighting of the Confederate forces afterward. He also provides detailed accounts of the Red River Expedition of 1864, illustrating the destruction along the river to Alexandria, Louisiana. In addition to this, Goodwin provides small observations of weather, of a sailor s life, of locals, and of the wildlife and scenery of the area. He discusses politics within the Brigade, such as animosity toward officers and the uneasy relationship between white Union troops and the Native Guard and U.S. Colored Troops. Series II, William Wiseley Research Material, ca.1983 Also included in the collection are research materials compiled by William Wiseley, PhD. They are comprised of an edited/annotated typescript of the diaries, biographical information collected on Goodwin, a manuscript on Charles Ellet, and Wiseley s bibliography. Photocopies of Goodwin s service record, various publications of the Society of Survivors of the Mississippi River Ram Fleet and Marine Brigade, and photoprints of images of Civil War naval battles contribute to the research, as well as photographs taken by Wiseley of Goodwin s home in Findlay, Ohio, and of Goodwin s grave marker and gravesite. Finally, a number of articles are included, such as The Mississippi Flotilla in Civil War Sketches and Incidents (Omaha, 1902), The Federal Gunboat Flotilla on the Western Rivers to 1862 (University of Philadelphia, 1939), and 13 th Infantry in Iowa and the Rebellion (Philadelphia, 1866).
