International Conference On ADVANCES IN FIBROUS MATERIALS, NONWOVEN AND TECHNICAL TEXTILES (AFINT 2006) August 7-9, 2006 An International Conference on Advances in Fibrous Materials, Nonwoven and Technical Textiles (AFINT 2006) will be held in Coimbatore city, popularly known as Manchester of South India from August 7 to 9, 2006. It is jointly organised by SSM College of Engineering, India and The Institute of Environmental and Human Health, Texas Tech University, USA. The focus of the conference is on the emerging technological advancements in the frontier areas of Textiles, Polymer and Fibre Production, Coloration and Finishing, Textile Testing, Nanotechnology, Nonwoven and Technical Textiles. India is emerging as a textile powerhouse with enormous growth opportunities. With the burgeoning middle class over 300 million; there will be an explosion of textile material usage in all sorts of applications, providing a huge market for global textile players. India is a preferred place for multinationals to venture into a myriad of business opportunities including nonwoven, medical, technical textiles and apparel sectors. This conference will provide a common platform for the international community to exchange knowledge on the latest technological developments taking place in the global arena of textiles. Given the importance of India in the global trade, this conference is timely and would open up a number of opportunities for global players. PREAMBLE A lot of innovations have been taking place both in natural and man-made fibre technologies. From genetically modified Bt cotton to graft or copolymerized fibres, phase changing polymers, surface modification of textile structures, textile composites, application of plasma and nano technology and new production technologies have paved the way for more sophisticated applications of textiles. Encouraged by unlimited opportunities in smart textiles, nonwovens and technical textiles, institutes and industries are engaged in rigorous research and intellectual property activities. The scope and application of textiles in the fields of automobile, space, aeronautical, geological, agriculture and medical are manifold and warrant fundamental and applied research. Textile composites nowadays replace many metallurgical components. High performance and modified fibres are employed in textile composites with suitable matrix medium. Advances in medical textiles such as wound dressings, compression bandages, extra corporal devices and scaffolds for tissue engineering serve for the well being of human kind. This conference will feature topical papers in all these burgeoning areas and eminent personalities in the textile field from many countries will participate in the conference. 6

ORGANISERS This international conference is organized by SSM College of Engineering, India in association with The Institute of Environmental and Human Health (TIEHH) Texas Tech University, USA. SSM College of Engineering (SSMCE) is a modern educational institution committed to deliver high quality technical education in textiles and student support services in engineering and management disciplines approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and affiliated to Anna University in Chennai, India. In the international scenario, it is a contributing member of UNESCO, International Centre for Engineering Education (UICEE), technical collaborator of Carrera group Italy, Nodal Agency of International Computer Driving License (ICDL), and Secretariat of the International Textile Education Consortium to promote global networks in textile education. The first and unique International Conference on Textile Education (ITEC) was conducted recently by SSM College of Engineering in Chennai. The college is also the technical supporter along with Carrera group, Italy, for the Cauvery hitech weaving park at Komarapalayam, a joint promoter of the consortium of hitech weaving parks and hybrid knitting operations in Tirupur. For promoting entrepreneurship, Entrepreneur Development Cell sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India has been set up in the college in the School of Management Studies. The college is one among the seven centers in India selected by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India to set up an information technology laboratory and impart IT application and training in textiles. This year s conference will be the third consecutive international conference co-hosted in India by The Institute of Environmental and Human Health (TIEHH), Texas Tech University, USA. The Institute of Environmental and Human Health began in 1997 as a joint venture of Texas Tech University (TTU) and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC). Almost 10 years later, the program has developed into a world-class academic program with state-of-the-art laboratories where research conducted has tremendous impact on industry, education, governments and individuals around the globe. In this short time, scientists at TIEHH, in collaboration with faculty at TTU and TTUHSC have created a unique multidisciplinary research and academic program working to find answers to real-world issues related to the effects of toxics on the environment and human health. Located at Reese Technology Center, TIEHH is also committed to stimulating the area's economic development through it s almost $50 million in research grants and contracts facilitated through TIEHH since its establishment. Within TIEHH, the Division of Advanced Materials at TIEHH was established to focus on and facilitate the development of value-added and novel materials to enhance human life such as defense textiles and bio-based automotive textiles. Nanotechnology-based research activities focus on nanoparticles for environmental contamination remediation, nanofiber filters, bioengineered nanomaterials for human health improvements. TIEHH is the first academic facility in the United States to house the most modern H1 technology needlepunching machine. Students involved in advanced materials research also graduate with MS and PhD degrees in Environmental Toxicology, which is also housed through TIEHH.
