BIOLA UNIVERSITY JOB DESCRIPTION Student Missionary Union Title of Position: Director of Short-Term Missions Basic Function and Responsibility: The Student Missionary Union (SMU) Director of Short-Term Missions (STM) oversees the STM department, including supervising staff, managing department finances, facilitating student involvement in STM programs, and coordinating retreats and training events. Additionally, the STM Director represents the STM department and teams to missions organizations and Biola s administration, and collaborates with other departments within SMU and other student organizations when necessary. Duties: 1. Oversee the planning of the STM Training Weekend, Debrief Day, and leader retreats. 2. Work continuously towards the implementation of SOE. 3. Manage the allocation and use of STM's annual budget, and oversee the management of STM team funds. 4. Present interterm and summer trip proposals to MARC and advocate for trip approval from Biola University. 5. Act as a voting member of the Board of Directors. 6. Participate in the interview and selection process of STM team leaders. 7. Connect team leaders with missions organizations when necessary. 8. Act as a contact person for missions organizations interested in partnering with SMU on short-term missions. 9. Equip STM team mentors with the information necessary to accomplish their roles with the mission teams. Follow up with mentors as necessary. 10. Seek to improve the way teams are coordinated through SMU by means of evaluations and follow-up interviews. 11. Facilitate weekly STM departmental meetings. 12. Meet regularly with individual STM staff positions. 13. Be aware of the day-to-day operations and needs within the STM department and problem solve as needed. 14. Delegate STM projects as needed and see that they are carried out. 15. Provide prayer support for the department and all individuals involved. 16. Encourage and support team leaders. 17. Attend weekly SMU staff meetings. Supervision Received: SMU President Supervision of Others: Team Development Coordinators (3), Logistics Coordinator, Research Coordinator, and Recruitment & Member Relations Coordinator. Qualifications: Skills: Strong understanding of the Great Commission and the value of Short-Term
Missions. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including periodic nights and weekends. Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Ability to effectively communicate concepts, ideas and directions both in written and verbal format. Ability to facilitate discussion, resolve conflict, and solve problems. Education: At the time of appointment, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 on a scale of 4.00. Failure to maintain this GPA requirement will result in immediate forfeiture of this position. For applicants with a current GPA between 2.5 and 3.0, the GPA requirement may be appealed. In addition, applicants at time of appointment must have completed at least one semester at Biola University with full time student status or be a transfer student having completed at least one college semester elsewhere and currently enrolled as a full time student. Experience: Experience in Short-Term Missions is preferred, specifically as a STM staff member or past team leader through SMU. Experience with team development, event planning, and/or staff supervision a plus. Hours Worked: 18 hours/week, 9 months
SMU STAFF REQUIREMENTS GENERAL REQUIREMENTS To qualify for candidacy for SMU Staff: One must be at Biola at full- time status or, if having transferred from another college or university, have completed at least one semester at Biola with full- time status and be currently enrolled as a full- time student. One must be in good academic standing and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale upon hiring and throughout term. One must maintain full- time status throughout serving in the position unless graduating after the Spring Semester of his or her term of office, in which case he or she must take at least six units during the Spring Semester. One must hold and maintain good standing with Biola s Community Standards. Violations of these requirements may result in termination at any point throughout one s term in office.
