Saubhagya Ministry of Power The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has launched a new scheme Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana Saubhagya to ensure electrification of all willing households in the country in rural as well as urban areas here today.

To provide electricity connections to over 40 million families in rural and urban areas by December 2018. Despite the government s aggressive village electrification programme, the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gram Jyoti Yojana launched in July 2015, under which 78% of 18,000 villages have been electrified, it was realised that the problem of electricity access wasn t resolved. The scheme will help India, the world s third-largest energy consumer after the US and China, to help meet its global climate change commitments as electricity will substitute kerosene for lighting purposes. With no subsidy component for monthly electricity consumption, the Gram Panchayat and public institutions in the rural areas will be authorised to carry out billing and collection tasks which have been pain points for the discoms.

To ensure on-the-spot registration, mobile applications will be used. While free connections will be provided to below poverty line (BPL) households, even those not covered under this category can avail it by paying Rs500 in 10 instalments of Rs50 each along with their monthly bill. The beneficiaries for free electricity connections will be identified using Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC) 2011 data. The Rural Electrification Corporation Limited (REC) will remain the nodal agency for the operationalisation of the scheme throughout the country.

Revamped Khelo India The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the revamped Khelo India programme at a cost of Rs.1,756 crore for the period 2017-18 to 2019-20. This marks a watershed moment in the history of Indian sports, as the Programme aims at mainstreaming sport as a tool for individual development, community development, economic development and national development.

Salient features: an unprecedented Pan Indian Sports Scholarship scheme, which would cover 1,000 most talented young athletes each year across select sports disciplines. Each athlete selected under the scheme shall receive an annual scholarship worth Rs. 5.00 lakh for 8 consecutive years. This is the first time ever that a long-term athlete development pathway would be made available to gifted and talented youngsters to excel in competitive sports and will create a pool of highly competitive athletes who can compete to win at the world stage.

The Programme aims to promote 20 universities across the country as hubs of sporting excellence, which would enable talented sports persons to pursue the dual pathway of education and competitive sports. The Programme also aims at creating an active population with healthy life-style. The Programme would cover about 200 million children in the age group of 10-18 under a massive national physical fitness drive, which will not only measure the physical fitness of all children in the age group, but also support their fitness related activities.

National Sports Talent Search Portal The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has launched National Sports Talent Search Portal to unearth sporting talent from every nook and corner. The portal will be also available as smartphone application. Using this portal, a child or his parents, coaches or teachers can upload their bio data or video on the portal.

Process You can apply to a scheme in a simple three step process: Step 1 - Register on the site. You can register for your ward. Step 2 - Create a profile. This is a very important step. Every year several people apply to the SAI scheme. In order to get shortlisted provide as much information as you can specially if you have been a sport person and participated in competitions before. Step 3 - Apply for a scheme. Once you have created your profile you can apply to any eligible scheme of SAI.

Digital Police Portal The Union Ministry of Home Affairs launched digital police portal under Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems Project (CCTNS). The CCTNS project was initiated in 2009 as part of police modernisation programme under the national e-governance project.

KEY POINTS: Digital Police Portal will enable citizens to register FIRs online and the portal will initially offer seven Public Delivery Services in 34 States & UTs, like Person and Address Verification e.g. of employees, tenants, nurses etc, permission for hosting Public Events, Lost & Found Articles and Vehicle theft etc. It provide investigator the complete record history of any criminal from anywhere across the country. Central investigating and research agencies also have been provided logins to the portal to access crime statistics.

Nationwide campaign: Gaj Yatra Ministry of Environment and Forests A nationwide campaign to protect elephants on the occasion of World Elephant Day. The campaign is planned to cover 12 elephant range states. It is 15 months campaign the will be led by the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI).

As per the available population estimates, there are about 400,000 African elephants and 40,000 Asian elephants across the globe. Asian elephants are listed as endangered and African elephants are listed as vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of threatened species.

The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog launched National Nutrition Strategy aimed at Kuposhan Mukt Bharat. To address this and to bring nutrition to the centrestage ofthe National DevelopmentAgenda, NITI Aayog has drafted the National Nutrition Strategy. Formulated through an extensive consultative process, the Strategy lays down a roadmap for effective action, among both implementers and practitioners, in achieving our nutrition objectives.

The national nutrition strategy calls for convergence between four proximate determinants of nutrition- uptake of health services, food, drinking water & sanitation and income & livelihoods. It envisages Kuposhan Mukt Bharat linked to Swachh Bharat and Swasth Bharat. The strategy lays down a roadmap for effective action, among both implementers and practitioners, in achieving our nutrition objectives. It enables states to make strategic choices, through decentralized planning and local innovation, with accountability for nutrition outcomes. It also gives prominence to demand and community mobilisation as key determinant to address India s nutritional needs to bring behavioural change efforts to generate demand for nutrition services.
