LETTER FROM THE REGIONAL FINANCE CHAIR Dear Corporate Partners: Region II of the National Society of Black Engineers is excited to invite you to partner with us as we strive to fulfill the NSBE Mission. This year, our directives will empower our membership through improvement, by providing them with data on how members can empower themselves, mobilize engineering exposure by sustaining academic excellence, and fostering a culture in Region II that is supportive to our members. In order to achieve our goals, this will require communication, execution, and the support of our corporate partners. Region II boasts 1,513 collegiate members, 1,081 NSBE Jr. (pre-college) members, and 58 lifetime members. In addition, our NSBE professional membership has grown to include 491 members. Our collegiate members represent 50 active chapters throughout Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Our NSBE Jr. members represent a total of 41 active chapters and our Professionals membership represent 17 active chapters. According to U.S. News and World Report s 2018 Top engineering programs, 11 of the top 50 ranked universities in the nation are located within Region II. In addition, our region encompasses a wealth of universities with the best undergraduate engineering programs, along with being the home of 12 historically black colleges and universities. According to Diverse Issues in Higher Education, we have five in the top 10 institutions, that graduates the most African-Americans with a B.S. in engineering and six out of top 10 that graduate the most African-Americans with a M.S in engineering; each year. Region II is home to some of the top talent that NSBE has to offer. During the 2016 2017 academic year, members of Region II reported a verified average GPA of 3.22 with over 1,000 transcripts submitted. Our region has developed a reputation for tremendous leadership, membership participation, and academic prowess. These qualities make Region II unique and unparalleled with the opportunities it presents to recruiters. ACADEMIC TECH BOWL: $1,000 The objective of the Academic Technical Bowl is to encourage and showcase Academic Excellence and understanding of the fundamental principles of engineering covered in the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE/EIT) Examination. The competition will include three components, the individual Progress Assessment Competition, the group Technical Engineering Competition, and the Quiz Bowl, which will be in a Jeopardy! style game show format. Students in grades 6 12 form Ten80 Student Racing Challenge teams that use model (1:10 scale) radio-- controlled cars and mimic professional motorsport teams. The first weeks of engagement are spent learning how systems operate and how to organize data, rather than following "build" directions. After being "certified" in mechanical systems, data and problem solving students spend the duration of the program year rebuilding the car with improved parts. Once students master the fundamentals of problem solving, data and mechanical systems, they specialize in areas of personal interest, to include project management, marketing and business.
