Sons of Confederate Veterans Page 3 Adopt-A-Road Cleanup On June 7, the Norris Camp had one of its largest turnouts for the Adopt-A-Road Cleanup ever! A very thorough cleaning was made by the seven individuals who showed up. The pictures will attest to the large amount of trash we picked up. Pictured are John Howerton, Commander Frank Brown Jr., Dave King Jr., Matthew King, Mickey Gutierrez and Steve Fernandez. Taking the picture was Dave Redden. Thanks for the awesome turnout and hard work. Our next road cleanup is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 16, at 9 a.m. This next cleanup will be right before our big river crossing event and we want, of course, for everything to look great for that event. Plan on coming out, as with many people, the cleanup is fast and very rewarding. The Battle of Fort Stevens was the only time in United States history that a president in office came under direct enemy fire. Sesquicentennial 1864/2014 Follow the trail of the final Confederate invasion of the north in the summer of 1864. This bold attack on Washington, D.C., was stalled at Harpers Ferry, delayed for one crucial day at the Battle of Monocacy, and finally repelled at the Battle of Fort Stevens. Three national park sites Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, Fort Stevens and Monocacy National Battlefield have coordinated planning of 150th Anniversary events to provide visitors an opportunity to understand and experience the role all three sites played in preventing a Confederate attack on Washington in July 1864. 150th events and activities at Monocacy National Battlefield, July 5 through July 13, will provide opportunities to explore and understand the importance of the Battle of Monocacy, as well as the broader historical context and aftermath of the Civil War on a national, state and local level.
