NON PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS There is evidence that it is institutionalised entity, this meaning that the organisation has a charter, regular meetings, officers, rules, or other indicators of relative permanence.
Private. Non-profit organisations are institutionally separate from government, meaning that they are not agencies of government, neither are they controlled by government, even if they receive government funding.
Non-profit distributing. Unlike other organisations in the private sector, non-profit organization are not attempting to generate profits for the owners or directors meaning that excess revenues must be spent to achieve organization s mission.
This does not mean that non-profit organizations can not make a profit. Rather, it means that distributing the profits to those who manage or direct the enterprise is prohibited. Therefore we have the phrase Non-profit.
Self governing. Non-profit organizations govern themselves and control their activities. This means that they set their own procedures and are independent of external control. They have their own boards of directors and provide of external control.

Voluntary. At a minimum, there must be some voluntary participation in either the management of the organisation or in the conduct of its programme, meaning that there is some aspect of charitable contribution involved. The terms charitable organisations and voluntary organisations derive from this characteristic of non-profit organisations.

FOUNDATIONS What are foundations? Private and community grant-making foundations are part of the growing non-profit sector. Foundations are often the mechanism for the linking single sources of funds to other nonprofit organizations seeking funding.
FOUNDATIONS Company-sponsored foundations either have an endowment established by a forprofit corporation or receive annual contributions from the corporation or both. Independent foundations are those established when an individual, family, or group contributes a significant sum to achieve a goal.
FOUNDATIONS Community foundations receive gifts from many different donors who are interested in funding programmes in their own community.
