F-o-R-E-W-o-R-D by Kelly Thompson, President Emeritus In 1969, as one of ~ final acts as President of Western, I submitted A Report to the Board of Regents by the President of western KentuckY University. The report was prepared, almost in its entirety, by an ad hoc faculty and staff committee. It was printed in brochure form and was widely distributed. The report is on file in several of the offices of the University and is in Archives. Page 20 of the report identifies the major construction projects from with primary costs calculations. During the intervening years since 1969, I have ~eceived requests for other information relative to various of these projects, especially regarding architects, final costs, and how the projects were funded. I have attempted herewith to provide a "package" of information relative to the projects listed on page 20 of the report. It is hoped that the effort will be of value to those to whom future inquiries may be directed. The w. R. McNeill City-College Cooperative School with footnote is listed in the 1969 Report to the Board of Regents. It was constructed by the Bowling Green Board of Education. western's share of the cost was $63,111.70. The University also provided the five-acre site on which the school is located. A 1968 project is listed as Campus Summit and Adjoining Area Development. This restorative renovation focused on the preservation of the site of Fort Albert Sydney Johnston and was an irrp:>rtant segment of the WKU Master Plan for which western employed the nationally recognized campus planning architects, Johnson, Johnson & Roy. 1

The last project listed on page 20 of the 1969 report to the Board of Regents was Ivan Wilson Center for Fine Arts. Architectural and engineering plans and a plan for funding were completed at that time. Construction of the project was begun in 1970 and completed in 1972. In addition to those listed on page 20 of the report, there are two projects which I think should be included with the following mention, as they had great effect on many of the others. First and most importantly was the acquisition of additional land contiguous to the campus. Many of the other projects could be planned and so located because of the successful conclusion of the Jonesville Urban Renewal Project, which included the Edgehill Shopping Center and adjoining acreage. This was a joint cooperative venture of Western, the Urban Renewal and Community Development Agency of Bowling Green, and the Kentucky Department of Finance. western's share of the cost was $191,750.00. Second, the construction of University Boulevard brought immediate relief from burgeoning traffic problems. University Boulevard was designed and constructed by the Kentucky Department of Highways. western provided necessary right-of~ay. Information provided herein relative to Final Costs of Capital Construction Projects and Sources of Funding was provided by the Office of Business Affairs of western. July 1, 1988 2
