As Community Grants Manager you will manage Mind s grant giving programmes, both to the local Mind network and other delivery partners, which contribute to the achievement of Mind s strategic goals. The main purpose of the role is to: Ensure all Mind s grant giving is strategic and supports specific strategic goals Ensure all grants are delivered effectively, overseeing the selection and management of grants Manage the monitoring and evaluation of grants Contribute to the development of new grant programmes Work with Business Development and Partnership Fundraising to secure further funding for grants programmes Work with the Communication team to market Mind as a grant giver and communicate the impact of our grants work Ensure full integration of the grants into Networks and Communities work, as well as the breadth and depth of Mind s national and local work. Manage the promotion of other programme business opportunities to the local Mind network to ensure a consistent approach to recruitment and selection as required. Ensure the widespread sharing and scaling of learning from grants across the organisation and wider networks, including commissioners, through promotion and training activities
Scope of the job You will be based in the Networks and Communities Department at Mind, reporting to the Head of Community Programmes and Grants. The Department works in partnership with Mind s extensive networks across England and Wales, harnessing the power of the local and the national working together. You will be based in London some of the time and also expected to travel extensively to ensure effective delivery of projects across England and Wales. You will manage one Grants Officer based in London and, dependant on funding, may be required to manage a flexible team of Grants Officers that is likely to change over time. The current portfolio of grants that you will manage include: Mind s local Mind grant fund grants drawn from Mind s fundraising and shop profits, available to all local Minds A range of specific grants from external funders such as Young Beginnings, Creative Therapies, Grants for Carers and Thames Water debt prevention The grant programme within Mind s peer support work for the Big Lottery, managing 45 grants local Minds and community partners You will work closely with other Managers and Heads in the Networks and Communities Department to ensure the grants are fully integrated across N&C s work, including supporting how we recruit and select business partners to deliver other programme work. In addition, you will work with staff and other stakeholders across the organisation and within the network to take the learning from grants to inform our future work with the local Mind network. You will be expected to work towards this aim. Key responsibilities 1. Oversee the effective management and delivery of a portfolio of grants for Mind, ensuring specific targets and outcomes are met and achieve impact on Mind s strategic goals 2. Manage and provide exemplary line management and team development to a flexible team of Grant Officers and administrators dependant on funding available. 3. Regularly review performance against targets and budgets (including re-forecasting), providing regular activity and financial reports for the management and governance teams and funders, detailing delivery against outcomes and targets 4. Where appropriate, ensure grants are robustly evaluated to track and measure impact and outcomes, contributing to a robust evidence base 5. Ensure full integration of grant work into the breadth and depth of Mind s national and local work, ensure the widespread sharing and scaling of learning and models, through working closely with Mind colleagues across the department and organisation. 6. Manage the promotion of other programme opportunities to the local Mind network to ensure a consistent approach to business partner recruitment and selection as required. 7. Work closely with Business Development and the Partnerships Fundraising Team to establish, manage and maintain sustainable, positive and productive working relationships
with potential and existing grant funders, including contributing to the development and writing of funding bids for further grants and reporting. 8. Be a role model for positive, collaborative and cross-organisational working across Mind, proactively identifying and ensuring synergies across teams, the Department, the organisation and partners to maximise our impact 9. Ensure grant work reaches across diverse communities and that the views of people with experience of mental health problems inform and guide work and actively seek opportunities to involve people with lived experience in planning and delivery 10. Maintain an excellent understanding of the health and social care funding and policy and environment, with a view to enabling grants to plan for their sustainability and for the development of new grant programmes to meet identified needs 11. Contribute to regular internal and external communications about the Unit s work 12. Work with colleagues across the department to ensure strong relationship management processes and systems are in place with all Local Minds and other grantees 13. Work in a positive, collaborative and cross-organisational way across Mind, proactively identifying and maximising synergies between work across teams throughout the organisation and with partners 14. Undertake other duties that may from time to time be necessary, and that are compatible with the nature and grade of this post Expectations 1. Person specification Community Grants Manager Essential criteria 1. Experience of programme and project management including budget management with a track record of delivering against targets and objectives including those of at least 100,000 2. A professional track record in the design and development of funded grant programmes, including innovation in design and delivery 3. Outstanding grant management experience, with a track record of delivering excellent performance against agreed targets and objectives 4. Ability to identify and exploit synergies and learning from a grant portfolio, with practical experience and understanding of how to share, scale and diffuse grant learning on a large and sustainable scale 5. Expertise in using appropriate methodologies to evaluate, understand, codify and value impacts and outcomes of practical activities to create a robust evidence base, packaging and communicating findings for a range of stakeholders 6. Expertise in developing and using organisational diagnostic and selection criteria in relation to grant giving and organisational development 7. Expertise in delivering through community partners and/or within a federated network; understanding the challenges faced and the skills required 8. A track record of engaging with new audiences with the work delivered, including reaching into non- traditional audiences for that organisation 9. Experience of being a leader relating to defined work, including providing giving guidance, coaching, presentations and support 10. Outstanding oral and written communication skills with internal and external audiences, including formal reports and presentations to funders 11. Experience of line management of a team and working effectively across traditional management structures and boundaries 12. Willingness and ability to travel and have occasional overnight stays in England and Wales 13. Mind (National Association for Mental Health) Additional information Community Grants Manager Interview and travel expenses Mind is prepared to pay travel expenses for those asked to attend an interview to a maximum of 175. However, the cheapest form of travel must always be used other than in exceptional circumstances in which case the agreement of the Head of Human Resources must be sought. Conditions of employment In the light of legislation [Section 8 Asylum and Immigration Act, January 1997], as a condition of being able to commence employment with Mind, the successful candidate will be required to provide documentation to prove that they are able to work in the UK. Starting salary 34,824 per annum plus 2,992 per annum geographical weighting, followed by five annual increments to 39,903 per annum. Increments will be subject to annual review in accordance with Mind s procedures. Hours of work/flexible working hours A standard 35 hours per week within 8.00am to 7.30pm, Monday to Friday, excluding one hour break for lunch. Mind operates a flexible working hours scheme whereby members of staff can vary the time they start and finish work within the parameters agreed by their line managers. However, the core period of 10.00am to 4.00pm (excluding lunch break) are the times during which you must be at work. Time off will be given for work outside the standard hours. Overtime is not payable.
