Philip Wilson Steer, Watching Cowes Regatta (detail), 1892 Four Seasons Open Exhibition 2018 Application Form Submission Dates 18 to 20 January 2018 Exhibition Dates 3 February to 21 April 2018 Southampton City Art Gallery North Block, Civic Centre Commercial Road, Southampton SO14 7LP art.gallery@southampton.gov.uk www.southamptoncityartgallery.com Giuseppe Arcimboldo (c.1527) Summer, oil on canvas, Southampton City Art Gallery

Entry Information All residents of Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Wiltshire and Dorset are invited to submit their artwork for this 'open exhibition.' Many artists have been inspired by the changing nature of the seasons: from beautiful Autumnal colours to re-birth and growth in Spring; from Winter frost and snow to Summer flowers and shimmering heat. The turning of the seasons has served as a means for artists to explore deeper issues around the cycle of life, the rhythms of nature and the relentless march of time. The judges will consider both 2-D and 3-D work in any medium, within the size restrictions detailed overleaf. The judges encourage you to consider the theme as creatively as possible. The successful artists will have their work exhibited at Southampton City Art Gallery from 3 February 21 April 2018. Submission Dates Delivery of artwork to Southampton City Art Gallery at the following times on the following days only: Thursday 18 January 10am-1pm Friday 19 January 12am-3pm Saturday 20 January 11am 4pm Cost of Entry Artists can submit up to 4 works, at a cost of 10 per work for the first two submissions and 5 per work for a third or fourth submission. For example, if you want to submit 3 works, it will cost 25. Only cash and credit/debit card payment will be accepted. Categories and Prizes There are two entry categories: Young Persons (ages 11-17) Adults (18 and over) The winners of each category will be announced at the Private View on Saturday 3 rd February. The overall 1st prize winner of the adult category will receive the opportunity to show their work in a future solo exhibition in Southampton City Art Gallery s Foyer. A special prize for drawing will also be awarded by 'The First' Gallery in honour of the artist Eric Meadus (1931-70). Further prizes to be announced. Judging and Results Submissions are reviewed by a panel of judges to ensure the best range of quality work is displayed. The judges will select the work based on the skill, inventiveness and originality of the artist s response to the theme. Unfortunately, due to the number of applications, feedback for individual unsuccessful applications will not be provided and correspondence will not be entered into after the judging day. All entrants will be notified by email if their submission/s have been successful by 5pm on Wednesday 24 th January. All unselected works must be collected from the Gallery on: Thursday 25 th January (10am 5pm) or Friday 26 th January (10am 12noon).

Entry Requirements Wall Fixings Work that is intended to be attached to the wall must be supplied with at least two mirror plates attached to the reverse of the work and centred, as shown. The mirror plates should be strong enough to support the full weight of the work when attached to the wall. If heavy, a third mirror plate should be added to the top centre of the frame. Wall-based work supplied without mirror plates will not be accepted. No metal/clip frames please. Labelling All submissions must be clearly marked on the back top left hand corner or underside with the artist / maker s name, address, day-time telephone number and the title of the work. Please also allow space for a reference number to be added. Example label and positioning: Format of Artwork Submitted works must not exceed one metre or 39 in any dimension. When considering the scale of the work entrants should be aware that exhibition space may be limited. Video work will need to be supplied on a DVD in Mpeg4/ Windows media file format. Due to hardware limitations only a maximum of 4 films will be shown in the exhibition. Please note the films will be shown on 19inch monitors.

Terms of Submission Eligibility The artist / maker must live or work in Dorset, Wiltshire or Hampshire (including Isle of Wight). Employees of Southampton City Council s Arts & Heritage service may not submit work to the Open Exhibition. Artists wishing to enter the Young Persons category must be under 18 years of age on the 18 th of January. Sales and Payment Sales are administered by Southampton City Art Gallery, with a 30% commission fee (plus VAT) on all work sold. For example: Artist s Price Commission VAT Sale Price in Exhibition 100 30 6 136 Any Artists who do not wish to sell their work can write NFS (not for sale) instead of the price on their application form. Collection All unselected works, which are not shown must be collected from the Gallery on: Thursday 25 th January (10am 5pm) or Friday 26 th January (10am 12noon).
