UNICO National Scholarship Offerings 2015-2016 Sergeant John Basilone Memorial Graduate Scholarship The UNICO Foundation, Inc. will grant up to a maximum of $6,000, paid out at $1,500 per year, for a graduate scholarship. The awardee must be initiating graduate study, full-time, at an accredited college/university program in the United States. A candidate must be a United States citizen of Italian heritage. Dr. Benjamin Cottone Memorial Scholarship The UNICO Foundation, Inc. will grant a $5,000 scholarship, paid on award, to a student pursuing graduate education at an accredited medical school in the United States. A candidate must be a United States citizen of Italian heritage. Bernard and Carolyn Torraco Memorial Nursing Scholarships The UNICO Foundation, Inc. will provide grants valued at $2,500 each, paid on award, to students attending accredited prelicensure or graduate nursing programs in the United States. Preference is given to applicants demonstrating financial need. A candidate must be a United States citizen. This program is open to nursing students of all ethnicities. Miele Scholarship Theodore Mazza Scholarship The UNICO Foundation, Inc. will grant four scholarships valued at $6,000 to high school seniors who will be attending, full-time, an accredited college/university program in the United States; paid out at $1,500 per school year up to a maximum of 4 years. A candidate must be a United States citizen of Italian heritage. Candidates are encouraged to apply for all four scholarships. To do so requires the original application and three complete copies, including attachments. Multiple copies are necessary because scholarships are judged at different locations. DiMattio Celli Family Study Abroad Scholarship The UNICO Foundation will grant two scholarships, valued at $1,250 each, for study in Italy. Candidates must be currently enrolled, full-time, in an accredited college or university in the United States, pursuing a degree. The study abroad program must be eligible for credit by the student s college/university. An applicant must be a United States citizen of Italian heritage. Ella T. Grasso Literary Scholarship The UNICO Foundation will provide two literary scholarships, valued at $1,000 each. Application for this program will be open to matriculated college students. Terms of submission require the candidate to present, in writing, an original short story or essay celebrating their Italian heritage.
Guglielmo Marconi Engineering Scholarship The UNICO Foundation will grant a scholarship valued at $1,250 paid on award to a sophomore, junior or senior student enrolled full-time, in an accredited college/university program in the United States majoring in engineering. An applicant must be a United States citizen of Italian heritage. Robert J. Tarte Scholarship for Italian Studies The UNICO Foundation will provide a scholarship, valued at $1,000, to a student enrolled fulltime, in an accredited college/university program in the United States pursuing Italian Studies. A candidate must hold United States citizenship. This program is open to applicants of all ethnicities. Ralph J. Torraco Scholarship The UNICO Foundation will grant two scholarships, valued at $2,500 each, to students enrolled full-time, in an accredited college/university program in the United States pursuing a degree. A nominee must hold United States citizenship. This program is open to applicants of all ethnicities. Louise Torraco Memorial Scholarship for Science The UNICO Foundation will grant two scholarships, valued at $2,500 each, to students enrolled full-time, in an accredited college/university program in the United States pursuing study of the Physical Sciences or Life Sciences. A nominee must hold United States citizenship. This program is open to applicants of all ethnicities. Ralph J. Torraco Fine Arts Scholarship The UNICO Foundation will grant two scholarships, valued at $2,500 each, to students enrolled full-time in an accredited college/university program in the United States pursuing a degree in the Fine Arts. A nominee must hold United States citizenship. This program is open to applicants of all ethnicities. A nominee must reside in the home state of an active UNICO Chapter. Candidates MUST meet the eligibility requirements stated on each of the respective applications. Applications may be acquired from and submitted through a State Chapter, the District Governor or the UNICO National Office. Online degree programs are not eligible for UNICO scholarships. This requires the original application and three complete copies, including attachments. STANDARDS FOR CONSIDERATION & ELIGIBILITY: A. Italian Origin: The candidate shall be a United States citizen of Italian ancestry, i.e. must have at least one grandparent of Italian origin. Documented and notarized proof may be requested by the selection committee, if necessary. B. Sponsorship: An applicant must reside in the home state of an active UNICO Chapter. Every UNICO Chapter, in good standing, may sponsor candidates for each of the UNICO Foundation scholarships. Applications may also be submitted through the District Governor or the UNICO National Office. C. Educational Requirements: A candidate must be a senior at any public or private secondary school. The applicant must submit either SAT or ACT scores and must be recommendable to an accredited college or university by his/her secondary school. The candidate must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Proof of college enrollment must be provided prior to issuing the scholarship award check. D. Financial Need: Financial need will be considered. In assessing need, the numbers, ages and schooling requirements of siblings and other extraordinary expenses will be taken into account. E. Family Members: Family members of UNICANS may apply through their respective Chapters. F. Timeframe: The candidate must pursue his/her course of college study within the year of the scholarship grant. Any deviation will result in forfeiture. ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS UNICO Foundation, Inc. through this program, seeks students of outstanding merit who show appreciation for the value of an education and who are willing to achieve success. It is to be noted further, along with the maintenance of the required college scholastic standards as a condition precedent in awarding the scholarship, the National Director of Scholarships and UNICO Foundation Trustees reserve unto themselves the right to cancel or otherwise terminate a grant at any time an awardee, in their opinion, directly or indirectly engages in undesirable activities. The National Director of Scholarships and UNICO Foundation Trustees need not assign any reason for their action and the awardee shall have no recourse.
MANDATORY INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTS These documents must accompany the application. Modifications are not permitted. Applications that do not conform to the following will not be considered. 1. Two Letters of Recommendation: (approximately 200 words) A. One from a school representative B. One from a member of the community, not affiliated with the school 2. Official Transcript: This must show the most recent grades and the scores obtained on a national test: either the College Entrance Examination Board Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Testing Program (ACT). May be sent separately. 3. A Chapter letter of endorsement and presentation may be included. (Optional) In addition to the standards for consideration and eligibility previously listed, applications will be judged on citizenship, leadership, character, community service, and commitment. Exhibits evidencing notable achievements in these areas may be attached. Remove all letters from envelopes and bind the letters flat. The applicant should avoid repetitious accounts. Responses requiring extra space should be written on separate 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of paper. Sealed transcripts may be sent directly to the National Office. FILING OF APPLICATIONS 1. Applications must be filed prior to APRIL 15 with the UNICO Chapter Representative or directly with the National Office. 2. Applications must be signed by a school Guidance Counselor and properly certified by the UNICO Chapter or National Office Representative. ALL signatures are mandatory. One (1) complete copy, including attachments, MUST BE submitted for EACH specific scholarship being sought. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
