Pre-Proposal Application For Production & Post-Harvest Research Projects g Application deadline June 1. General Information g Representatives from two industry groups critically review all pre-proposals. The groups are: (1) The Growers Council of the Society of American Florists (SAF) and (2) the Production & Post- Harvest Research (PPR) Committee of the Endowment. g All applicants will be notified of approval or non-approval for a full proposal by early October. g If approved, a full research project proposal will be required in November. g If funded, researchers are required to publish not only in professional journals and other scientific publications but also in industry publications. In addition, special research reports are required at the conclusion of the project. Lastly, acknowledgment of funding by the American Floral Endowment is required for all publications and presentations. g Application checklist is provided below. Application Checklist Each page of the pre-proposal must be numbered. Applications and supporting documents must be submitted no later than June 1 Please submit to AFE electronically (daker@afeendowment.org) in PDF form. The application must be completed in its entirety using the provided form. A separate PDF document will be required for the two-page project description. (See page 6) Scientists must identify a highly researchable topic that either currently is or will be relevant to the floricultural industry. A realistic timetable and scientific approach must be provided. Inclusion of preliminary data is desired. Literature review must be brief but include relevant research conducted either domestically or internationally. Pre-proposals not conforming to these guidelines will be returned as soon as they are received. American Floral Endowment Pre-Proposal Application for Production & Post-Harvest Research Projects Due no than June 1 each year for the following funding year Introduction The purpose of this information is to provide each applicant with the guidelines for American Floral Endowment (the Endowment) pre-proposals for production & post-harvest research. Priorities of the Endowment Periodically, the Endowment conducts industry surveys to assist the Board of Trustees in identifying current and future problems faced by the floral industry. The feedback helps to focus funding efforts aimed at solving all industry problems. The basic research priorities are listed below. They are focused on all floricultural crops, e.g., bedding plants, fresh cut flowers, fresh cut greens, flowering potted plants and foliage plants. The basic research priorities are: 1. Plant Breeding and Genetic Engineering of Floricultural Crops 2. Management Protocols for Floricultural Crops 3. Management Systems for Diseases for Floriculture Crops 4. Management Systems for Insects Affecting Floricultural Crops 5. Post-Harvest Management Systems for Floriculture Crops The Pre-Proposal Process Properly prepared pre-proposals must be submitted not later than June 1. The Growers Council of SAF will initially review and evaluate them in September. Subsequently, the Production & Post-Harvest Research Committee of the Endowment will conduct the final review. The Endowment will notify all scientists of their pre-proposals status in early October. All researchers invited to submit a full proposal must submit a new full research proposal forms via email. These full proposals are due in November. Subsequently, the Endowment will conduct a scientific peer review and make a final decision by the end of January. Researchers will be notified of the decision in February and the final funding decision will be made in late July based on the availability of funds. Multiple-Year and Team Projects To accomplish the research goals of the project, the Endowment funds 1 to 3 year long projects. In addition, projects with either a single researcher or multiple researchers at the same or different institutions are considered. When two or more researchers are included, a team leader must be designated to coordinate the implementation and reporting of the project. Grants will be paid to each team member and/or institution separately. Young Researchers The Board of Trustees recognizes the need for young researchers to be able to establish their careers in floricultural research. Thus, they give special consideration to these researchers who submit well-written pre-proposals and full proposals that specifically address industry needs. To meet these criteria, the Board of Trustees urges these researchers to contact industry representatives prior to developing their pre-proposals. This will aid identifying researchable problems.
