Singapore I April 8th - 10th, 2013 World Health Summit Regional Meeting - Asia Singapore 2013 M8Alliance Alliance of Academic Health Centers and Medical Universities 1st Announcement

2 Summit Introduction Summit Introduction About the World Health Summit The World Health Summit is the annual conference of the M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centers and Medical Universities together with the National Academies. It is one of the world s foremost gatherings of leaders from academia, politics, industry and civil society. The aim is to develop joint strategies and address key challenges in medical research, global health and health care delivery to shape the political, academic and social agendas. The World Health Summit is held annually in Berlin, Germany. About World Health Summit Regional Meeting Asia The Regional Meeting Asia, hosted by the National University of Singapore (NUS) and MOH Holdings Pte Ltd (MOHH) in Singapore 2013, is the first meeting of the World Health Summit to be held outside of Berlin. This regional meeting continues the aim of the World Health Summit to engender improvement of health care and health-systems. The discussions and debates will strengthen the links in place between research, academic medicine and decision makers across all health care sectors, including government and industry, with a focus on Asia and its specificities. With a 5.9 per cent growth rate in 2011 +, far ahead of Europe and the US, Asia is seen as the global economic engine for the next decade. But this growth also brings obvious challenges for health care in the region, home to more than half of the world s population. The urbanization rate of Asia is projected to grow from 40% to 60% by 2030^. The challenges, especially for health care and health-systems, are therefore obvious: Megacities, environmental hazards, fast growing and aging societies. Asia s challenges need Asian solutions and international cooperation at scientific, economic and political levels. Hence, the organizing team has chosen the theme of this Regional Meeting Asia as Health for Sustainable Development in Asia. This meeting will address: The Impact of Health on Asian Economies Innovations in Health in Asia Financing Health Care in Asia Emerging Health Threats in Asia The topics will be presented in Asia s context, by thought leaders who have achieved solutions in Asia. The sessions being planned will also bring together application of research, human capital development, financing and health coverage. This regional meeting will bring together members from academia, health care, industry, government, and non-government organizations to address Asia s health challenges. NGOs, civic society and international aid organizations play major roles in public health and health care provision in Asia and will also participate in this meeting to share their experiences. Ministers of Health from various countries in Asia will also be invited to share their first hand experience of policy and health system reform. All these health care leaders will be coming together at this regional meeting to move research and knowledge to policy and implementation in Asia and beyond. We welcome you to Singapore to be a part of the inaugural regional meeting of the World Health Summit, to share and learn together. + International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecast declaration 2012 ^Population Reference Bureau / Population Today 2001 Cover Image: Urban Redevelopment Authority.
