Please encourage your student to attend this very fun night. Please join our Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/green-white-up-all- Night-Post-Grad-Event Thank you to Ocean State Transportation for the generous donation of bus transportation that the Post Grad Committee raffled off to the teachers in the district. Mrs. Shurtleff, the C&T Cosmotology teacher, won a free bus for a pre-approved field trip. Our major fundraiser, The Chariho Community Festival, will be held May 12, 2012. We are currently seeking vendors for this event. If you or someone you know would like to be a vendor, please contact us at CharihoPostGrad@hotmail.com We are also seeking parent volunteers to join our group. If anyone is interested in supporting the Post Grad committee, please e-mail us atcharihopostgrad@hotmail.com

Page 2 Guidance Happenings The next two months bring a flurry of activity to the guidance department. Seniors will be encouraged to complete college applications before 2012 rolls in, regardless of due dates. Our state schools (URI and RIC) both have early application deadlines in December in order to be eligible for merit scholarships. Both schools utilize the common application (www.commonapp.org) along with 454 other schools. All students applying to four -year schools should create a common application account. Teachers and guidance counselors can be invited to submit all forms online through this process, which colleges prefer. Students are responsible for notifying the guidance staff when applications have been submitted online as no application will be considered complete without a transcript. In January the focus for seniors turns to financial aid and scholarships. Guidance counselors will visit all senior advisories during the week of December 5 th to share information about the financial aid process. Any student seeking financial aid needs to complete the FAFSA (www.fafsa.ed.gov ) after January 1, 2012 but before March 1 st. Applications completed after March 1 st will be accepted but are not guaranteed certain forms of aid. A parent meeting to share information about the financial aid process will be held on December 14 th at 6:30PM. The presenter is a member of the Rhode Island Financial Aid Officers Association. The best source for scholarships is our own website www.chariho.k12.ri.us/scholarships, which provides links to all the Charihobased opportunities. Check the site regularly as new applications are activated all the time. PSAT results generally arrive the first week of December. Students who take advantage of the benefits provided with their score reports will see an improvement in their scores. Encourage your child to review the websites listed on the score report to assist with SAT preparation and the college search process. Each student will receive their actual test booklet back in addition to a list of each correct answer as well as their chosen answer. One of the websites will show students how each problem was solved. A list of areas to focus on is also included as part of the information. The ASVAB, another test that provides a wealth of information (in addition to being the military entrance exam), will be administered the week of November 15 th. Please have your child visit guidance to register if interested. During the last week of November, counselors will be talking to ninth graders about Career and Technical programs and how to apply if interested. Students will have the opportunity to take a tour if interested and spend time in programs of interest. Any parent with questions about CTC and how it will impact your child s schedule is encouraged to call guidance or the new director Susan Votto. A career and technical education provides your child with a life- long skill while at the same time keeping all post-secondary options, including college, open to your child. Counselors continue to visit all advisories in grades 9-12 to update each student s Individual Learning Plan (ILP). Students will review goals from last year, update their progress towards the goals and create new ones as applicable. We also continue to explore another manner in which to complete the ILP so that parents will have access. The guidance advisory council is helping in this endeavor. Finally, guidance evening hours are scheduled for November 30 th and December 14 th (which will include the financial aid presentation). Please contact the guidance office at 315-2834 in order to schedule an individual appointment with the counselor on duty. The quarter closes on November 10 th with report cards issued a week later. Parent conferences will follow the second week of December, which also includes an evening the guidance staff is available. Enjoy the fall, Stacy Haines-Ma Mayne Guidance Director

Page 3 Gift Card Fundraiser The holidays are right around the corner.. Shop for your gifts and household items by purchasing gift cards from popular retailers and raise money for Chariho High School at the same time! Back by popular demand, Scrip is the fundraising program that works while you shop. The CHS PTO s fall gift card fundraiser began on Monday, November 7th and will end on Friday, November 18 th. Order forms have been distributed to students; in addition, the order form was distributed to parents via email and can be found on our website at http://www.chariho.k12.ri.us/chspto. Gift cards will be distributed at parentteacher conferences on December 12 th and 13 th. Please consider making the purchases you would probably make anyway by purchasing gift cards through this fundraiser. Funds raised by the PTO are used for Teacher Grants (awards are provided to selected applicants to be used to enhance the education of our students), student clubs and organizations, and for contributions to the Post-Grad Party & Community 2000 grants. A second gift card fundraiser will be held in the spring from April 30 to May 11. Please contact Tammy Anderson at tam505@cox.net with any questions.

On that sheet you can see the many portfolio opportunities your child will have in their classes this school year. Please encourage your child to work hard on portfolio projects and to scan into the portfolio proficient projects/essays/etc. After-school portfolio help is available every week for English, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

Page 5 Library News CHARIHO REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER The greatest gift is a passion for reading. ~ Elizabeth Hardwick ~ Chariho Students are reading! A record number of students checked out library materials in September as compared to the three previous years. The implementation of silent sustained reading in English classes has contributed to this increase. As a reminder to families of our loan policy, the loan period for library materials is two weeks. Students need to return or renew overdue materials before they can check out new materials. Students are responsible for lost or damaged materials. CHS Library - Comparison of September Circulation Statistics 2008-2011 2500 Number of Items Circulated 2000 1500 1000 500 977 1680 1899 2046 # items circulated 0 Sep-08 Sep-09 Sep-10 Sep-11 A few years ago, we received grants from the PTO and the CCEP to fund the purchase of Playaway audio books. Playaways are pre-loaded audio books that resemble a personal MP3 player in size and function. These audio devices are especially useful for the challenged reader, however, students in general have embraced this new technology and our Playaway collection has become very popular. We are continuing to add to this collection as we encourage students to explore all avenues to reading. The CHS Library also joins the ebook trend! Thanks to a grant from the CCEP, the library will be acquiring several ereaders for student use. The ereader program should be up and running after the New Year. Updates on this program will be included in the next newsletter. Please feel free to contact one of the librarians with any questions.
