MISSION STATEMENT To deliver nationally recognized criminal justice training and academics in a collaborative, affordable environment while leading by example, and setting high standards of conduct and character, expecting no less from others. 4

OBJECTIVE Is to provide a safe, first-class, teaching and learning environment that includes a comprehensive curriculum, an enthusiastic innovative faculty and staff, appropriate technology and equipment, diverse modes of instruction, and up-to-date support services. 5

GOAL To adhere to compliance with State law and the guidelines set forth by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement for the education and training of officers. 6

ACADEMY HOURS 0800-1700 8 hour workday Monday Friday Holidays Changes will be made for some training such as building search, scenarios, etc. 10

Attendance Mandatory All courses are conducted under the rules of the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education and the CJTC Advisory Council. A cadet must attend 100% of the course, in accordance with these guidelines, in order to complete and receive credit for the course. 11

Attendance Mandatory In the event of an absence, all cadets are expected to call and advise a staff member of their absence. You are expected to attend all training courses. All cadets are required to complete an absence report form and present it to their squad or class leader as soon as they return to class. The form is then given to Asst. Coordinators Hughes or Garza 12

Attendance Mandatory In the event of an absence, the cadet will make-up the absence in compliance with TCLEOSE mandates and as indicated within these guidelines. If an emergency prevents a cadet from completing any course work, notify the course coordinator as soon as possible. Regardless of circumstances, it is the responsibility of the cadet to obtain notes, handouts, booklets, assignments, etc., upon missing any class time. 13

Attendance Mandatory Punctuality It is expected that cadets be punctual for the start of each session. If a cadet believes they are going to be late, a staff member must be notified as early as possible, no later than 7:45 a.m. of the anticipated tardy. 14

Attendance Mandatory Punctuality Cadets are required to return to the classroom from breaks on time. If an Instructor does NOT set a time, it shall be 10 minutes from the time they start the break. Three or more unexcused tardies will make a cadet subject to dismissal. 15

Attendance Mandatory Personal Appointments Don t make them for during academy hours. 16

Attendance Mandatory Process Report any tardy or absence immediately to an assistant coordinator verbally. Report any tardy or absence to your training coordinator (at your department) NLT than 1000 hours. Complete a absence tardy form and complete the required writing assignment to be turned in NLT 0800 hours the following morning. 17

Injuries Immediately report all training injuries to your training coordinator or staff member. Immediately notify your agency s training coordinator. 19

Facility & Services Use of tobacco products of any kind is prohibited on campus. No smoking, chewing and/or dipping in ANY uniform Food and drinks are NOT allowed in the classroom, or hallways. Exception: Water in issued water bottles. 20

Facility & Services Keep the locker room clean Floors: Nothing on floors! Place everything in Lockers: Hide valuables! Keep the break room clean Refrigerator Tables Food Racks (now in the back of the classroom) 21

Facility & Services College Gym facilities Open to cadets Turn in your ID card at the front desk when you go to the gym in order to get a gym pass/band. 23

Facility & Services Cruising Parking for BPOA cadets is located at the west end of the parking lot. Campus speed limit is 20 mph Campus parking lot speed limit is 10 mph Do not park in the yellow marked spaces. 24

Facility & Services UNAUTHORIZED AREAS Cadets are not allowed to enter the staff office area without obtaining permission from a staff member. Cadets needing to use the academy telephone may use the front office telephone after obtaining permission 26

Classroom Etiquette ATTENTION! All cadets will stand at attention when ANY Instructor or staff member enters the room. This applies only once per day. Do NOT stand at attention if an instructor is teaching in the room Exception:» One instructor comes in the morning, and another comes in the afternoon. Formation, Pledge of Allegiance, Code of Ethics daily 27

Classroom Etiquette Technology Cell phones Do not possess in classroom(either on or off)» Use only in break-room, bathroom or outside (in the back of the building)» No calling or texting during class time» Exception: class leader prior approval from staff 28

Classroom Etiquette Technology No ipods or similar device(s) Laptop computers Note-taking does not include surfing the web, looking for jobs, gambling, social networks, etc. No book bags 29

Classroom Etiquette Breaks Breaks are left up to the discretion of the instructor. Most instructors will lecture 45-50 minutes Do not get up and walk out of a classroom to take your own break. Lunch Instructor s discretion 1 hour maximum, some days shorter but at least 30 minutes 30

Professionalism Appearance Facial hair Clean shaven daily (starting Monday) Trimmed mustache (NOT past corner of lips/ below top lip) No sideburns past the bottom ear opening No earrings (males) and one per ear (females) Hair Neatly trimmed and combed Males not touching collar or ears Women s hair should be up not on collar and tight to the head No extreme hairstyles including faux hawks 31

Professionalism Designated Uniforms Head cover (Issued Caps) Always, always uncover when indoors. Worn outdoors. If it is not issued, it is not approved for wear. (keys on belt, sunglasses, etc. -- anything on uniform) 39

Professionalism Courtesy Always greet other people in or around the CJTC facility. Always stand at attention against the wall and address staff, other officers and the public. Show people respect and it will be returned. 40

Professionalism Harassment Sexual, racial, religious, national origin, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, or age harassment are prohibited and will NOT be tolerated. Cadets will not use profanity or show disrespect to any staff member, instructor, or fellow student in the training center. 41

Professionalism Break room The break room is NOT your living room. Do no prop up your feet or sprawl out on the furniture. 42

Professionalism Enforcement Disciplinary warning form Can be removed after 30 days if no other warnings for any behavior It is up to you to contact a coordinator at the 30 day mark. Otherwise, the warning becomes a part of you permanent record here. Class leaders can request a disciplinary warning Any coordinator can issue a disciplinary warning Required notification to your training coordinator 43

Professionalism Enforcement Chronic problems/repeated behavioral issues Often results in the cadet s dismissal from the program. 44

Fraternization DO NOT No social networking with full-time staff or adjuncts No exchanging or accepting e-mail addresses or telephone numbers with adjuncts No lunches with adjuncts No ride-alongs with adjuncts 45

Academics Major Examinations Cadets must obtain 75% or above on all academic testing. Only one (1) retake is allowed. If a cadet fails two (2) exams, he/she is subject to dismissal. There will be time limitations on exams. Tests are cumulative * Testing dates are subject to change 46

Academics Grading Ledger A = 100 90 B = 89 80 C = 79 75 F = BELOW 75 Anything below 75% is considered failing. 47

Academics Studying Group study is encouraged and can be extremely helpful! Cheating WILL NOT BE TOLERATED! You cheat, you go You will be immediately dismissed from the Academy. 48
