JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Modern Matron CLINICAL UNIT: Paediatrics BASE: The Portland Hospital for Women and Children MANAGED BY: Children s Services Manager ACCOUNTABLE TO: Chief Nursing Officer HOSPITAL PROFILE Internationally renowned for clinical excellence, The Portland Hospital is the only independent hospital in the UK entirely dedicated to women and children. Our inpatient and outpatient specialties reflect this, providing clinical expertise in Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Women`s Health. The hospital has been consistently growing over the past few years, almost doubling since 2008. Our Paediatric wards hold 56 inpatient beds + 11 day case and are equipped with the latest technology to provide advanced medical and surgical care, including a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit which reflects the acuity and complex nature of the children who are admitted to our hospital. The Portland Hospital has a large number of international Paediatric patients, often funded by relevant embassies. The Portland Hospital is the only fully private maternity hospital in the UK. The hospital provides for both consultant-led and midwifery-led deliveries, having an 18 bedded ward and 6 cot neonatal unit to facilitate this. Alongside this there is a 12 bedded Gynecology and Women s Health in-patient ward. The Portland Hospital also has a large outpatient department for all areas of its clinical expertise, to facilitate continuous care or simpler procedures. To be highly visible and available to patients thereby promoting confidence in our services To maintain a high profile within the hospital
To develop and maintain positive Consultant relationships To maintain high standards for clinical practice and ensure teams have the skills to deliver the needs of the nursing service in a safe, efficient and effective way. To promote and enhance patient focused care by assessing areas of risk in relation to patient safety and implementing initiatives to improve patient experience. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Clinical practice 1.1 To monitor and maintain standards of clinical practice 1.2 To empower and enable staff to perform their roles effectively 1.3 To ensure infection control and prevention policies are adhered to and to work closely with the Infection Control and Prevention Nurse. 1.4 To promote clinical governance and service improvements following the analysis of complaints, adverse events and other drivers for change 1.5 To ensure that nursing staff maintain accurate and contemporaneous records. 1.6 To work as part of the multidisciplinary team. 1.7 To maintain personal contact with patients and relatives and assist staff in dealing with complaints 2. Leadership 2.1 To provide leadership and support to clinical nurse managers and their nursing teams and act as a role model 2.2 To ensure that the NMC Code of Professional Conduct guidelines are adhered to within the nursing teams. 2.3 To share best practice and drive improvement in patient care. 2.4 To ensure Clinical Nurse Managers and the wider nursing teams adhere to all HCA policies and procedures. 2.5 To support the nursing teams in the delivery of key agenda items such as the Clinical Services Framework for Excellence, Integrated Governance Strategy and All of Us principles. 3. Quality and Patient Safety 3.1 To ensure that Safeguarding issues are managed effectively and appropriately by relevant agencies and that staff fulfil their obligations in relation to their responsibilities in this area.
3.2 To ensure the ward rosters meet the needs of the service and patient safety is maintained. 3.3 To understand the principles of good workforce planning and to support the clinical nurse managers to meet their department targets. 3.4 To facilitate team awareness and monitor compliance pertaining to, regulations and standards appropriate for their department, particularly in regard to CQC and CHKS 3.5 To facilitate requests made by the Head of Governance in relation to any regulatory or accreditation inspections regarding evidence. 3.6 Identify and participate in the development of nursing policies and procedures 3.7 To ensure complaints are managed in line with HCA Policy and local procedures ensuring the investigation tool is completed and learning is identified for individual complaints within the set timescales. 3.8 To ensure Datix investigations are completed within two weeks of the reported date, ensuring lessons learnt and action taken are identified and implemented to maintain a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors. 3.9 To oversee and lead on the risk register ensuring it is current and reflective of key risks within the nursing areas and monitored regularly. 3.10 Address poor practice and put in place procedures to change practice going forward. 3.11 To promote and support staff in generating patient safety and patient satisfaction initiatives 3.12 To ensure the completion of all department safety checks 3.13 To participate in service improvement projects or development programmes that contributes to the modernisation of patient services. 3.14 To work with the housekeeping team and estates team ensuring a safe and clean environment for patients, visitors and staff. 3.15 Ensure a safe working environment for all staff visitors and patients reporting any associated risks. 3.16 Ensure all equipment within the department is maintained to the standards set and adhere to MHRA Guidance. 3.16 Ensure staff adhere to the data protection act and comply with information governance ensuring patient confidentiality at all times. 3.17 Ensure the completion of the clinical nursing audits and that action plans in place 3.18 To ensure that for each service improvement identified, there is an action plan which facilitates a change in practice to reduce the risk and or frequency of incidence 3.19 Promote a culture of continuous quality improvement through the use of patient satisfaction feedback and reflection on practice. 4. Human Resources
4.1 To ensure all direct reports have a performance and development plan in place. 4.2 To support the Children s Services Manager with recruitment and selection processes within the department. 4.2 To ensure that the objectives set for staff reflect the business objectives and Clinical Services Framework for Excellence 4.3 To support the management and development of staff 4.4 Ensure that all staff adhere to the Data Protection Act and ensure patient confidentiality at all times. 5. Education and research 5.1 To support Children s Services Manager in developing an educational plan for each unit in conjunction with the nurse educator team. 5.2 To co-ordinate and lead projects in clinical practice development exploring appropriate models to support best clinical practice. 5.3 Be aware of current research and recommend innovations for clinical practice 6. Personal 6.1 To keep up to date with current knowledge and advances in nursing practice and maintain practice that is evidence based. 6.2 Be responsible for own continuous professional development in line with the NMC Registration. 6.3 To demonstrate sound understanding of Clinical Governance and apply to working environment 6.4 To be accountable for own actions and carry out duties as may be required and are consistent with the responsibilities of the role. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING Essential RSCN/RN Child NMC Registered Evidence of ongoing professional development, at a minimum educated to degree level or equivalent Mentoring and Assessment Course / ENB 998 equivalent Sound understanding of Safeguarding processes with up to date level 3 training Broad experience relevant to the post Demonstrable success in leading and delivering practice Proven ability to analyse complex problems and implement practical solutions
