PROGRAM INFORMATION AND COST: Pacific & Asian Affairs Council s Polynesian Cultural Exchange Study Tour to Tahiti Program Information Sheet - Tentative Trip dates: Practices: every other Sunday; Orientation: March 4; Travel: March 17 24, 2018 - Eligibility: Students currently in grades 9 12 who attend high school in Hawaii - Trip Description: The goals of the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council (PAAC) travel program are to further students international interests through a meaningful experience abroad and to build bridges between our group and the local people we meet, strengthening the relationship between countries on a personal level. Students will visit the island of Tahiti and Moorea in French Polynesia. The trip will feature Tahitian and Hawaiian language exchange, and teach students about traditional arts, cultural heritage, education, international affairs, history, and deep ties between Hawaii and Tahiti. This program includes a 1 day orientation for students and a parent-only meeting on Oahu before departure, as well as practices every two weeks (approximately) in the months leading up to the trip to prepare a repertoire of hula and mele. - Program cost: $2,150. Price includes all program related expenses such as in-country transportation, accommodation, meals, activities, travel insurance, and entry fees, and does not cover personal expenses such as laundry, communication, snacks, and souvenirs. International airfare and interisland airfare costs are not included, however, international flight reservations will be arranged by PAAC. - Scholarship Eligibility: Public and charter high school students in Hawaii are eligible for need-based, partial program scholarships ($1,000 - $2,000). Preference is given to students with financial need who participate in PAAC Clubs, After School Classes, or events. Applicants who are offered a scholarship must submit documentation to support their application before the scholarship will be awarded. The scholarship cannot be used to pay for the trip deposit. REQUIRED MATERIALS AND INSTRUCTIONS: Application deadline is NOVEMBER 1, 2017. 1. Application Form. Complete below and mail or upload requested documents. 2. Consent Form. This form can also be downloaded from the PAAC website. 3. Short Essay: Applicant must write BOTH essays (each should be 500 words or fewer). I. Why are you interested in traveling to Tahiti with this program? What do you hope to gain from this experience? How will your participation contribute to the program? II. Describe your involvement in PAAC activities (for PAAC students) and/or other internationally focused activities, such as travel, Model UN, school clubs, and extracurricular activities. How have these experiences inspired you, shaped your global perspective, or affected your view of the world?

The essay is a very important part of the application. Tips for writing a good essay: Ask teachers, parents, and/or friends to give you feedback. Revise your essays until you are satisfied that you have done your best. Avoid general statements like, I want to go on this trip to learn about the culture, without elaborating. Be specific and give examples whenever possible. 4. School Transcript and First Quarter Grades: Unofficial transcript copies are acceptable and can be obtained from your school. If you are in grade 9, upload one copy of your middle school transcript. 5. If you are in the 9 th grade, you may ask a teacher at your current school who would be willing to recommend you, or a teacher from 8 th grade. He or she may return his or her recommendation form and letter directly to PAAC, or you may upload/send it when you submit your application. If your teacher will submit these documents directly to PAAC, provide a stamped envelope addressed to: Selection Committee PAAC Summer Study Tour 1601 East-West Road, 4 th Floor Honolulu, Hawai'i 96848-1601 Your teacher s recommendation form and letter must be postmarked by November 1, 2017and is required in order for your application to be considered.
