Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital is a rural facility providing services to the Maleny region, including accident and emergency (24-hours a day, seven days a week on-call). The hospital has a fully functional sub-acute rehabilitation unit with a primary focus on patient-centred care and proven excellent track record in patient outcomes The Undergraduate Student in Nursing and Midwifery reports to the Nurse Manager Your role Contribute to positive patient outcomes by undertaking tasks that support nursing care activity as delegated and supervised by the Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Midwife (RM). Take responsibility for working within the scope of the USIN role as determined by the Health Service. Take responsibility for effective and timely communication with members of the team, patients and their carers.

Mandatory qualifications / Professional registration / Other requirements This position requires: Proof of enrolment in an undergraduate nursing course leading to registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Applicants will be in second semester, second year and must have successfully completed the first year and a half full-time equivalent of their nursing/midwifery studies including all theoretical and clinical competencies and must have at least 12 months of study remaining. Previous healthcare service is desirable. Certified copies of the required qualification must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager, prior to the commencement of clinical duties. This position may require you to work continuous shift rotations, weekend work as per departmental business requirements. Employees of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) have an obligation under the Public Health Act 2005 s.151(1) to take reasonable precautions and care to minimise risk of infection to other persons. Hepatitis B vaccination or proof that an individual is not susceptible to hepatitis B is a condition of employment for all Queensland Health employees (existing and new) who have direct contact with patients or who in the course of their work may be exposed to blood/body fluids or contaminated sharps. Failure to comply with this mandatory requirement will lead to disciplinary action. It is a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated/immune against the following Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) during their employment: measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), pertussis (whooping cough), hepatitis A. A VPD Evidence Form must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager, prior to the commencement of clinical duties. Existing staff that are engaged prior to 1 July 2016 are not subject to this condition of employment unless they apply for a role with VPD requirements that is with a different Queensland Health entity (ie one Hospital and Health Service (HHS) to another HHS, Department to a HHS, or HHS to Department). *Refer to Queensland Health CHRISP Guideline, Vaccination of Health Care Workers for a full explanation of staff vaccination requirements and categorisation of roles. Staff that enter clinical areas (e.g. inpatient units, outpatient units, procedural suites) and/or undertake direct contact with patients or a patient s environment or working in areas where there is an infection control risk (e.g. food handling areas) must be bare below the elbows at all times whilst in these areas. Role Fact Sheet Undergraduate Student in Nursing (USIN) The USIN works under the direct or indirect supervision of a Registered Nurse, or Registered Midwife and undertakes delegated activities within their scope of practice. The USIN role may include the following: Receipt of handover at the beginning of each shift. Assist with patient comfort/needs. Assist with patient nutritional and hydration needs which may include taking meal orders, serving food, feeding and collecting used trays. Assist with patient activities of daily living. Assist with safe mobility (transferring, walking, standing). Attend to patient pressure area care. Care and maintenance of oxygen and suction equipment. Documentation of care given (countersigned by RN). Assist with bed cleaning and making. Take medication charts to pharmacy, pick up blood products, run emergency blood tests to pathology. Equipment maintenance, stores/stock availability. Report WH&S issues to shift coordinator/num. Report faulty equipment to shift co-ordinator/ NUM. Attend ward meetings or education in-services as directed by shift coordinator. Participate in quality improvement activities. Basic observations: blood pressure, pulse rate, respiratory rate, temperature. Pulse oximetry. Specimen collection, urinalysis and faeces testing. Blood Glucose testing. Simple wound care. Assist with ostomy care and indwelling catheter care. Record nutritional intake and elimination. The scope of the USIN may be expanded as per: 1. The National Decision Making Framework principles. 2. Hospital and Health Service procedure and policy.

3. Competencies achieved within the academic program of study, commensurate with level of training and assessed competencies as endorsed by the university and health service. The following must NOT be delegated to the USIN: Administering medications. Administering and maintaining intravenous therapy. Undertaking invasive procedures. Independent development and evaluation of a nursing care plan.
