Smoke-free mental health services in : exploring the implementation guidance 17 th May 2011, Jury s Inn Hotel, Glasgow Overview The Smoking and Mental Health Working Group Meeting (SMHWG) held at Jury s Inn in Glasgow on 17 th May was well received by the 65 attendees. The meeting took the form of a seminar and workshop that allowed cessation practitioners and service managers from within NHS mental health settings to learn from the experiences of those already implementing smoke-free policies in residential mental healthcare settings. The event was supported by NHS Health and Celia Gardiner, Health Improvement Programme manager (Tobacco) started the meeting with an introduction to the new guidance on going smoke-free. http://www.healthscotland.com/documents/5041.aspx Matthew Clark, from the Southern General in Glasgow outlined how a smokefree internal environment was created in their psychiatric wards and Yvonne Cameron from Ailsa Hospital in Ayrshire described the practical steps taken to achieve a move towards smoke-free buildings in her hospital. Mary-Grace Burinski outlined the training available and under development at PATH and Susan Downie from NHS Ayrshire and Arran described some moving case studies of patients who have given up smoking with the support of Stopsmoking Services. Discussion was stimulated by reference to the scenarios to be found in the implementation guidance. The guidance itself attempts to identify good practice and offer information to negate much of the misinformation circulating about smoking and mental health and in creating smoke-free buildings and grounds. However, becoming a smoke-free hospital is a process that involves leadership, consultation and the participation of stakeholders in each establishment. Therefore there are many routes to smoke-free with some areas expected to take longer than others to reach the goal of a smoke-free mental healthcare service.
PowerPoint presentations are available on the ASH website http://www.ashscotland.org.uk/projects/inequalities/smoking-and-mental-healthworking-group Evaluation of the learning day Sixty-five people from a balance of management and cessation practice attended the event and 44 submitted an evaluation form. 93% rated the event excellent or good with 91% rating the speakers excellent or good. 67% said that the content of the day was very useful to their work. Delegates said: continued support is required to ensure that a broad range of stakeholders continues to be engaged and included in planning and improving policy and implementation. more support is needed to cater for patients under section or special observation. further opportunities to learn from others and discuss special difficulties are required, perhaps with the involvement of service users more information on the cessation treatments and support available to patients would be helpful to aid the understanding of staff voluntary and community sector organisations should be better represented at future updates.
