Design Competition Information Categories Please indicate the appropriate Category for your entry on the online entry form. In addition, if you wish to have your entry considered for a Specialty Award, check the appropriate box on the same entry form. One fee and one form is all that s required for consideration in two areas. The competition is divided into the following six main categories. Select the category that best characterizes your design(s). Small Kitchen (less than 150 sq. ft.) Medium Kitchen (150-350 sq. ft.) Large Kitchen (more than 350 sq. ft.) Powder Room (must contain a sink and a toilet, no tub or shower) Small Bathroom (less than 55 sq. ft.) Large Bathroom (more than 55 sq. ft.) Note: Open plan kitchens should be entered into an appropriate kitchen category, based on sq. footage. While calculating sq. footage for kitchens, cook, prep and clean-up areas, family desk, casual built-in dining, island dining, and eat-in areas should be included where applicable. Master bathrooms should be entered into an appropriate bathroom category, based on sq. footage. While calculating sq. footage for bathrooms, water closet, vanity, and areas for bathing, shower, closet and dressing should be included where applicable. Projects may be moved to an alternate category, as deemed appropriate by the judging panel. Category Awards First Place: $3,000 Second Place: $2,000 Third Place: $1,000 Specialty Awards All Category winners will be automatically considered for the following: Best Kitchen: $10,000 Best Bath: $10,000 Eligible projects can be entered for a chance to win the following: (see Competition Guidelines on page 3 and separate Entry Form) Before & After (Kitchen and Bath): $2,000 Outdoor Kitchens (Min. 200sq ft.): $2,000 Universal Design (Kitchen or Bath): $2,000 Budget-Friendly (Kitchen or Bath): $2,000 (Kitchen: $40,000 or less, or Bath: $20,000 or less) Honorary Awards Designer of Record with a primary industry segment of Builder/ Remodeler on the entry form will automatically be considered for the following: Builder/Remodeler Award In honor of Clay Lyon, CR, 2012 Honorable Mentions One (1) project to be selected for each of the six main categories Competition Prizes* In addition to cash prizes, all Category, Specialty Award, and Honorary Award winners will receive: One (1) personalized award Two (2) tickets to awards ceremony held during KBIS 2018 at Design and Construction Week in Orlando, Florida One (1) KBIS 2018 show floor pass with entry to VFTI Conference One (1) KBIS 2018 guest show floor pass In addition to cash prizes and the items listed above, the Best Kitchen and Best Bath Specialty Award winners will also receive: Two (2) free tickets to The BASH (held during KBIS 2018) Honorable Mention winners will ONLY receive: One (1) certificate of appreciation One (1) ticket to awards ceremony held during KBIS 2018 *Regardless of how many times you place. Design Competition Information (cont d.) WINNER Recognition Winners announced at the NKBA Design Competition Awards Ceremony during KBIS 2018. Winning project photographs will be on display at the NKBA Booth at KBIS 2018. Featured in NKBA Magazine, NKBA websites and social media properties. Included in a national press release to consumer and trade media. Possible features in local and national consumer and professional publications. Judging The competition entries will be scored on the following five core areas: 1. Safety & Ergonomics 2. Elements & Principles of Design 3. Design Planning 4. Creativity 5. Presentation Each of the industry experts selected to judge is either a Certified Master Kitchen & Bath Designer (CMKBD ), a Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD ), a Certified Bath Designer (CBD ) or a Certified Kitchen & Bath Designer (CKBD ). Judges are not eligible to enter the competition in the year of their service. Judges adhere to the NKBA Kitchen & Bath Planning Guidelines with Access Standards when scoring entries. Note: Projects produced within the judges company are not eligible. COMPETITION GUIDELINES The individual entrant must be the Designer of Record on the project and must be an NKBA member. Non-members must join the NKBA to enter the competition. Co-designers are not required to be members of the NKBA. (Maximum of two co-designers). If the entrant is not the owner of the business that billed the project, owner approval is required for eligibility. The owner is not required to be a member of the NKBA. The project(s) submitted must have been installed between January 1, 2016 and August 4, 2017. Enter the project into the one Category that best represents your project. You may enter as many projects as you would like that fit into the six different Categories. If your project qualifies for a Specialty Award, it is to be entered in addition to the Categories on the same entry form, (ex. Small Kitchen, Before & After Kitchen) and no additional fees are required. A new entry form is required for each project submitted and is to be completed in full. Each entry requires a separate fee. Entries must be received at the NKBA Headquarters by August 4, 2017 with the entry fee included. Early bird entry fee for projects received between June 1 - July 1, 2017 is $75. Regular entry fee of $90 applies for projects received between July 2 - August 4, 2017. Projects should be clipped together with binder clips. Do not staple any pages and do not place in folders or portfolios. All identifying design and firm information on floor plans, elevations, design statement and photographs must be blacked out. Design Competition Information (cont d.) Required Materials Checklist Reasons for Disqualification If any materials are omitted or if required criteria is not met, the entry will be disqualified. No notification will be given. The NKBA reserves the right to disqualify a project before, during, or after the contest judging. Entry fees will not be refunded, and entry materials will not be returned. Click on the online entry form available on NKBA.org/Competition and enter all the requested information. On submitting the form, the system will generate a Project ID number and.pdf document of your entry form. Print the PDF form, and make sure you fill-in and complete the following information: Signed Releases (designer of record, client signature, and business owner signature) Signed NKBA Photography Release Form Entry Fee Payment Information Important: Please be sure to write your Project ID number on ALL of your supporting materials including design statements, floor plans, elevations, and on the back of ALL photographs (use of China Marker preferred on the back of photographs). For consideration as Budget-Friendly Kitchen and Bath, Outdoor Kitchen, Before and After, and/or Universal Design specialty awards, please see design statement template for requirements. Design Statement Guidelines Please use this as a guide when preparing your design statement. Design Statement Requirements: All design statements must be typed Do not include any identifying member information such as: - client name - business name - client location - business location If submitting a project to be judged for a Specialty Award, please incorporate the specific information (listed on the right) into your Design Statement To present your entry in the best way, please use the following guidelines to assist in creating a concise, effective design statement. This will help to ensure that the judges have a good understanding of your project. The following is meant to help guide you in creating an effective design statement. It can be written as a narrative, a comprehensive bulleted list, or a combination of both. Design Narrative Explain your project in a descriptive, 200-400 word statement that outlines client needs objectives, design philosophy, challenges, solutions, and special features. List of Highlights Using the references below, create a brief overview of your project. Objectives Outlined criteria to be met by your design solution. Casual dining for large family Contemporary tastes of clients Better traffic flow Design Challenges Describe fixed elements and special requirements. Design space around existing air ducts Include client s antique lighting Incorporate collection of rare pottery Design Solutions Describe how you solved the challenges. Created built-in shelving between air ducts Selected palette complimentary to antique lighting Custom lighting to spotlight pottery display Special Features Highlight design elements that are unique and memorable. Dual counter heights to meet needs of clients Repurposed wood flooring Recycled glass tile backsplash Please provide any additional information needed to accurately convey your project. Specialty Awards Design Statement Requirements (If applicable) When selecting a Specialty Award in addition to the category entry, please create one design statement, which includes the following specific information. Before and After (Kitchen or Bath): List challenges with existing space and what you did to improve the functionality and aesthetics of the space. List fixed items that changed or did not change and why. Outdoor Kitchen: List all materials and products specified for outdoor use. Describe any solution or feature that helped meet the unique needs of the client. Universal Design (Kitchen or Bath): List all products specified in the design that contributed to universal criteria. Describe any highlights or solutions that helped meet the unique needs of the client. Budget-Friendly (Kitchen or Bath): List all materials and products specified in the design that helped meet the client s budget. Describe any methods or practices used before or during the installation that contributed to cost-effective use of budget. Please attach a hard copy of your project s budget sheet along with your final entry packet. NOTE: Write your Project ID number on your budget sheet.
