7 NEW YORK AND BOSTON S TECH AND DATA SCIENCE BOOM With the recent announcement that Amazon is planning to lease 150,000 square feet in Boston s Fort Point, which will result in 900 new jobs, why are more and more companies are looking towards Boston and New York instead of Silicon Valley? Boston The Massachusetts Big Data initiative, originally launched back in 2012, has seen tech and data science return to Boston. To date, there has been more than $2.5 billion invested in over 120 data-driven companies as well as $20 million in federal grants which have been awarded to big data research. Outside of the grants, Boston has a big advantage over other cities in the US when it comes to talent. In fact, Massachusetts has by far the highest number of per-capita data related graduates throughout the US. The state alone boasts 14 data science programs which produce 5,600 students annually. Boston s encouragement of tech and data science has also drawn praise, with incentives available for everyone from grassroots companies to large corporations. With the State also getting involved, tech-minded individuals can always seek out lectures on everything from cloud computing to distributed databases. It s also worth bearing in mind that Boston also plays host to a number of data events such as the Analytics Fair, the Open Data Science Conference and more, all of which help aid the growth of the city s tech and data science scene. New York Data scientists in New York have launched several successful companies with businesses such as ZocDoc, MongoDB, Kickstarter, Vimeo, Tumblr and more all based in the city. There are currently over 110 big data companies operating in New York, and with more than $500 million made available to companies within the industry, it s no surprise that growing numbers of data businesses have looked towards Manhattan and the surrounding areas. Whereas the tech industry in New York was once limited to 23rd street and a few surrounding blocks, the industry has now expanded north to Harlem, the Bronx, Queens and even Brooklyn has seen new developments rise up. Every region has its own focus, and with Brooklyn attracting creative tech and urban tech companies, biotech and foodtech finding a home in Queens, and social enterprises in Harlem and the Bronx, it s clear that the tech scene in New York is spreading quickly.
