SCOUT SKILLS CHALLENGE COURSE The Klondike Challenge is a patrol-based event. The patrol will succeed or fail on the strength of its members. Adult leaders may accompany their Scouts only as observers and may not lend assistance or offer advice. Patrol members must work together to navigate the course and complete the challenges. The ideal patrol size is six (6) to eight (8) Scouts. Patrols with more than six (6) Scouts will have to sit out members in each event on a rotational basis. The Patrol Leader will have to track the order of who does not participate in each event. The decision of who sits out must be made before the event task is given to the patrol. The patrol should plan to carry with them the following equipment and supplies: Compass Sack Lunch for each Patrol Member First Aid Kit Flint and Steel (No Matches, Lighters, etc.) Boy Scout Handbook (4) Lengths of Rope, approx. 6 each Pencil and Notebook Adequate Water for each Patrol Member FIRE BUILDING Scouts must build a fire to burn through a string. Two matches will be provided. Use of additional matches will result in a time penalty. Use of flint and steel will subtract from the total time. FIRST AID You have located an injured person in a disaster area. Use your Scout skills to properly secure the scene and treat the injury, then move the victim to safety without causing further injury! KNOT TYING Scouts will be expected to tie the 1) square knot, 2) sheet bend, 3) two half hitches, 4) taut-line hitch, 5) bowline, 6) clove hitch, and 7) timber hitch, then whip a rope. Every Scout in the patrol must complete one (1) task. Results will be based on time. LASHINGS Scouts will be tasked with building two (2) camp gadgets a flag pole and a tripod using the correct lashings. The flag pole must be erected and stand on its own. STOWING YOUR GEAR Several items for a backpacking trip will be displayed on a tarp. Properly pack the necessary items in the provided backpack, then put the rest of the gear in a bear bag and hang it safely in a tree. LOG PULL RELAY A team of six (6) Scouts with a 10-foot rope will be judged based on time. Teams will be arranged with three (3) Scouts at each end of the course. The first Scout ties the rope to a long and pulls the log to the other end of the course. The next Scout pulls it back to the beginning of the course, and so on until all Scouts have completed the course. Page 3 of 6
