Coaching? The first use of the term "coach" in connection with an instructor or trainer arose around 1830 in Oxford University slang for a tutor who "carried" a student through an exam. [3] The word "coaching" thus identified a process used to transport people from where they are to where they want to be. Wikipedia (Source Online Etymological Dictionary)

What does it mean when someone says, I m a Health and Wellness Coach.?

What is Health & Wellness Coaching? Health and Wellness Coaches partner with clients seeking self-directed, lasting changes, aligned with their values, which promote health and wellness and, thereby, enhance well-being. In the course of their work health and wellness coaches display unconditional positive regard for their clients and a belief in their capacity for change, and honoring that each client is an expert on his or her life, while ensuring that all interactions are respectful and non-judgmental. ICHWC Website

Drivers toward certification With an explosion of health and wellness coaching programs, it is difficult to determine the expertise and quality of coaches. Without agreed upon standards for the training and practice of health and wellness coaches, the public and healthcare professionals are confused about what to expect from coaches and how they complement other professions. National standards and certification are the first steps in advancing consistent training, education, and assessment of competencies. ICHWC website

Coaching in the context of health care Credibility for the profession based on research Credibility for coaches National Standards Never ending development supervision and reflective practice

Why international certification? People with a wide array of backgrounds (e.g. architects, lawyers) in addition to health practitioners are coming to Health and Wellness Coaching. Some best HWC come from outside conventional medicine fresh eyes, not pathology focused. Challenge for those in education realms: How much do they need to know about medicine, health care and coaching? (Interview with Karen Lawson, MD, ABIHM- https://youtu.be/4mcbqas8b1e)

A brief (and incomplete) history of health and wellness coaching 1915 National Board of Medical Examiners founded 2002 - Wellcoaches partners with the American College of Sports Medicine 2010 National Consortium for Credentialing Health and Wellness Coaches founded 2017 International Consortium for Health and Wellness Coaching 2017 First certification exams to be offered in September

ICHWC Vision We envision that competent health and wellness coaching will act as a powerful force to facilitate healthy lifestyle change and improved quality of life. We believe as people use coaching to build healthier habits, these positive changes will become synergistic and spread, causing many aspects of our world to transform.

ICHWC Mission The mission of the ICHWC is to support individuals in improving their health and well-being, preventing and managing chronic disease, making important health decisions and optimizing their lifestyles to achieve their best possible overall well-being. That mission is pursued through the following three-pronged approach: To Integrate To integrate knowledgeable, skilled and credentialed professional health and wellness coaches into the healthcare system who facilitate lasting change of mindsets and behaviors to improve the health and well-being of individuals. To Support To support integration of basic coaching skills into the practices of health professions, so that healthcare providers are better able to catalyze and support engagement in health-enhancing lifestyles. To Advance To advance a collaborative research agenda and compile evidence on best practices. This would allow for refinement and further evaluation of health coaching methodology, as well as inform training and education practices

Job Task Analysis Job Definition Four Domains Knowledge Skills

ICHWC International Consortium for Health & Wellness Coaching The objective of the certification is to provide a minimum standard and measure of foundational competencies: the knowledge, tasks and skills essential to the practice of health and wellness coaching. Eligible individuals can now apply to become a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC).

Wellcoaches is Leading the Way From the launch of the Wellcoaches School of Coaching in partnership with ACSM in 2002, and having trained nearly 10,000 coaches since then, we have worked tirelessly to arrive at this moment, launching national standards which support the integrity and professionalism of the field, deliver a solid foundation for research, and provide clarity rather than confusion around the work and credentials of health and wellness coaches.

Quality After Certification?

The differences between good coaching and great coaching are continuously created by subtle influences that occur throughout the coaching engagement.

Subtle Influences Insufficient contracting Positive projections Negative projections Opportunity to work for x Accepting sponsor s objective of fixing client Sneaky shift to expert (especially when sought by client

Good to great to masterful coaching? Supervision in coaching is not an evaluative or oversight function but is a vibrant discipline of inquiry into all that is happening in our work with clients and ultimately is done on their behalf. The essence of supervision is a reflection on our work and us in our work.
