Timbuktu Academy Summer Programs Southern University and A&M College Baton Rouge, LA PROGRAM NAME: ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp for Middle School Students Duration: Two-weeks Orientation: Sunday, July 12, 2009 s for Summer 2009: July 13, 2009 July 24, 2009 Description: Criteria: The ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp (BHSSC), a two-week residential program, aims to enhance the middle school learning experience and to increase the pursuit of studies in science, mathematics, and engineering disciplines. The BHSSC emphasizes (1) the increase of students mathematics and science skills, (2) introduction to college life, and (3) stimulation of participants interest in science and engineering as potential career paths. Campers will participate in activities and classes targeting science (biology, chemistry, and physics), mathematics, English and reading, technology, and critical thinking. Activities are designed to enhance problem-solving, writing, communication, and research and study skills. Students will gain hands-on science experience and will participate in field trips to area scientific and industrial sites. Participants will conduct a research project and will make a multimedia presentation at the conclusion of the camp. Enrollment in BHSSC is limited to forty-eight (48) students. BHSSC is funded by the ExxonMobil Foundation. Applicants must be entering the 6 th, 7 th, or 8 th grade in the fall. Students selected to participate in the Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp must have a minimum GPA of B overall and in mathematics and science, score at Basic or above on standardized mathematics and science tests, and have acceptable disciplinary records. Give the request for records to your child s school registrar, and Give a recommendation form to your child s current science teacher and current mathematics teacher. If all requested documents are not received by the deadline, the selection committee WILL NOT review the application. Selections for the summer camp will be made by May 31, 2009.
