State Funding Headaches 1/25/11 Illinois appeals court rules the state s funding plan for its 2009 capital construction program unconstitutional Supreme court to rule on a request for a stay in the very near future Uncertainty of state funding impedes private donations Discussions underway with campus about alternative options for obtaining the state funds 3

Weathering the State Budget Uncertainty Enhancing Financial Stability Increased financial oversight at all levels Managing Human Resources 585 FTE decrease on General Revenue Funds (state/tuition funds) since FY09 Reducing Central Costs Energy conservation; central/cross-college service centers Reducing College Costs Shared services; Admin Consolidation; Extension reorganization Enhanced Revenue International students tuition/fees; self-supporting MS Conservation of Cash Limited hires; deferred expenses; better fiscal control Year-end Outcome Cash balances held by academic units up by more than $62M Deficits reduced by 23% 4

Investing to Protect & Advance our Campus Protecting access and the student experience Investment in Financial aid (growing by > $4.6M) Access Illinois the final major theme of Brilliant Futures campaign Expansion of James Scholars program Expanding small UG classes; establishment of UG research office College-based initiatives Protecting quality of life Investing in scholarship (Research Board, CAS, Humanities & Arts Research Fund, ) Supporting research compliance & safety Improving facilities Hiring and retaining the best faculty 133 strategic hires approved (5 in ECE) Support retention efforts Increased campus promotion increment 5

New Imaging Technique Accurately Finds Cancer Cells, Fast Stephen Boppart leads a team of researchers that have demonstrated the novel microscopy technique nonlinear interferometric vibrational imaging (NIVI). This technique produces easyto-read, color-coded images of tissue, outlining clear tumor boundaries in a very short amount of time. 18

Power and Energy Conference at Illinois Second annual Power and Energy Conference at Illinois was held in February. Planned and executed by ECE students. Universities from across the Midwest, as well as industry leaders, participated. 19

IEEE PES/PELS Joint Student Chapter Wins Best Chapter Award The Illinois IEEE Power Engineering Society and Power Electronics Society (IEEE PES/PELS) Joint Student Chapter was awarded the IEEE Power Electronics Society Best Chapter. This year marks the first time that a student chapter has ever received the IEEE Power Electronics Society Best Chapter Award. 20

Shenoy wins International Graduate Achievement Award ECE graduate student Pradeep Shenoy was named the recipient of the 2010 Illinois International Graduate Achievement Award. The award is awarded annually to one Illinois graduate student for innovative international research and service abroad. Shenoy had performed research in China in 2008 and in India in 2009. 21

New Program: Engineer in Residence Allows students to interact with people who have had substantial success with an ECE degree or in an ECE-related field. At least one invited each semester. First was Michael McCorquodale (BSEE 97), founder of Mobius Microsystems, now part of Integrated Device Technology. 22
