SPRINGFIELD HIGH SCHOOL 2016-2017 School Profile Springfield High School students will prepare for postsecondary learning through achieving fluency in the essential skills of reading, communicating, collaboration, and reasoning. Successful SHS graduates will be capable, respectful, responsible citizens of the community in which they live.

The School Springfield High School is a public high school serving grades 9-12. The total enrollment is approximately 430 students with 93 students in grade 12. The school continues to operate on a block schedule with four 80-minute periods a day. Core classes typically run every day for a semester earning a student 1.0 credit and elective classes typically run every other day for a semester earning a student 0.5 credit. Some classes may run every other day for the duration of the school year, earning a student 1.0 credit. Students in grade 12 will be permitted one open block each day if they are in good standing with their graduation requirements.

Rank in Class Rank in class is calculated at the conclusion of the student s junior year and again at the end of the first semester of senior year. All completed courses (except courses taken on a Pass /Fail basis) are included in the calculation of the grade point average. To determine the weighted class rank, accelerated classes and AP classes have been given additional grade points in order to calculate a weighted grade point average on a 5.0 scale. All students are included in the class ranking except students in the Occupational Development Program, High School Completion, and Parent Child Center. Graduation Requirements (starting with the Class of 2016) Twenty-six credits are required for graduation and the following requirements must be met: English - 4 credits Mathematics - 3 credits Required: Algebra 1; Geometry Social Studies - 4 credits Required: Global Studies I; Global Studies II; US History Science - 3 credits Required: Introduction to Chemistry & Physics; Biology; Earth & Space Science ( all are lab sciences) World Language - 1 credit Fine Arts - 1 credit Health - 1 credit Physical Education - 1.5 credits Electives - 7.5 credits Community Service -40 hours Special Curriculum Features 3 Advanced Placement Courses 10 Accelerated/Honors Courses 12 In-House Dual Enrollment Course offerings* Online courses through the Vermont Virtual Learning Collaborative (VTVLC) - these courses are offered at a standard, honors, AP and Dual Enrollment level and are available to any students who meet the prerequisite requirements. River Valley Technical Center (RVTC): RVTC offers Introductory (Foundational) courses as well as a full two-year programs in a variety of technical fields. Students earn elective credit (3 per year) and 1 academic credit upon successful completion of the two-year program. * Dual enrollment enables students to take a course from a participating college and receive both college credit and credit towards their high school diploma. Students have the opportunity to take these college courses on-campus at the high school or directly through the college (online or on the college campus). Currently, the state is providing two vouchers to every junior/senior and the vouchers cover the cost of the tuition. Dual enrollment courses are weighted to the same degree as honors courses.
