Page 1 of 10 Training Standard: Administration of Medication in Adult Social Care This mandatory training standard descries the learning outcomes which must e delivered to staff working under Camridgeshire County Council contracts or staff working for Camridgeshire County Council and meets the requirements of Camridgeshire Health and Social Care policies: Medicines Management in the Domiciliary Setting (Adults) Policy and Medicines Management in the Residential Setting Adult Social Care. What training does this relate to? A) Training in Administration of Medicines for support workers B) Training in Administration of Ear, Nose, Eye drops/ointments and Inhaled Medication for support workers. Who must have this training? All staff working in a care support role efore eing permitted to administer medication identified as Level 2 medication support in the aove policy Those who will assess the competency of support workers to administer medicines NB: Level 3 medication tasks are outside the scope of these training standards. However, staff must have completed any relevant training and achieved competency in any such task they are required to perform. When must the training e taken and when must it e refreshed? Training A (aove) must e undertaken, and competency must e demonstrated efore administering medicines. Training B (aove) must e undertaken after training A, and competency demonstrated efore administering ear, nose, eye drops/ointments or inhaled medicines. For oth A and B, training should e refreshed at least every 3 years. Competency should e assessed at least annually. If a specific knowledge gap is identified or there are changes in service needs then the full training course will e required as soon as possile. How must the training e delivered? Training A must e delivered face to face for a minimum duration of 6 hours and precede training B, which will require an additional minimum duration of 2 hours. Refresher training A, must e for a minimum of 3 ½ hours. On-line training alone is not considered adequate. It may however e a useful resource to reinforce/enhance learning. Who is qualified to deliver the training? Care Providers delivering medication administration training to their own staff in Camridgeshire or commissioning other training providers should ensure a Level 3 Development and Learning qualification or equivalent AND a minimum of 2 years experience of health or social care where staff are required to manage medicines AND a working knowledge of the relevant, current medication policy. OR A health professional such as a pharmacist with at least 2 years experience of working in the community AND a working knowledge of the current medication policy AND a working knowledge of the RPS guidance Handling Medicines in Social Care and relevant updates/
Page 2 of 10 replacements AND if the training is for care home staff, has satisfactorily completed the latest version of the Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE) programme Supporting People in Care Homes
Page 3 of 10 Timescale Required Standard/ Learning Outcomes Additional information Before eing permitted to administer medicines at Level 2 support Medication Competency assessment For all support workers who will e expected to administer medicines to service users at Level 2 support. This initial course should precede administration of ear, nose, eye drops/ointments and inhaled medicines training. The Training content must equip staff to fulfil the learning outcomes as set out in Appendix A (page 5) and enale support workers to successfully demonstrate competency to administer medication. The learning outcomes are ased on Skills for Care units ASM 34 and. To e completed efore eing permitted to administer medicines and following the initial medication administration training course aove The assessment must meet the requirements of the medication competency criteria Appendix A. It will assess the occupational competence of the support worker to administer medication safely: ased competencies must e assessed at least annually ased competencies must e assessed on completion of the aove course and at least every 3 years. The assessment method must assess the support workers knowledge of the relevant Medication Policy document, and current legislation and government guidance. Pharmaceutical advice should e sought and incorporated into the training material and the organisation s policy. As aove Refresher training for those administering medication The medication competency assessment should e completed in the workplace y a person who is assessed as competent to do so. See elow For all support workers who will e expected to administer medicines. Registered Managers are responsile for ensuring the assessment of competency is carried out. They may delegate this to a medication competency assessor who will e responsile for assessing the competence of support workers who are not registered healthcare professionals, and who support others with their medication. Those assessing competency will have experience of administering medication at level 2 and: Have completed the relevant training (A and/or B, as designated on page 1) and een assessed as competent themselves in any activity in which they are assessing competence. Develop their understanding of the relevant Camridgeshire policy on Medicines Management to enale them to competently assess others on its content Understand the competency process used y their employing organisation or service to fulfil the Medication Competency Criteria Identify how to assess risks and resolve issues in administration of medication Clearly explain the levels of support in medication administration Support others in understanding and using MAR charts Be assessed as competent in assessing others in the administration of medication Those assessing competence of staff should e ale to demonstrate continued competence to assess others in the relevant tasks.
