Summary of the 45th District Rotaract Conference RY 2013/14 Months of Planning, weeks of preparation and days of sleepless night had lead us to the one day we Northerners look forward to - the 45th District Rotaract Conference (DRC) 2014. The reason why we northerners were so eager for the day to come was because we, the Rotaract Club of Penang, AIMST University and Sentral College were the host of this annual district event. 10th of January 2014 was the day the 45th DRC began in Penang. It all started with the registration counter being open at 3 pm at the 1926 Heritage Hotel. There weren't many people who came and register at the beginning but towards the later part of the evening, participants from different parts of Malaysia started pouring in. Dinner was served at 7 pm and followed by the Opening ceremony at 8.30 pm. We were really honored because the opening ceremony was attended by our respected District Governor Dato' Mohinder Singh, Assistant Governor Paul, District Rotaract Chairman PP Robin Tay, President Tan Gin Soon of RC Penang, President Ricky Ch'ng of RC Tanjung Bungah, PP Bryan Chua of RC Seberang Jaya and most of the participants of the 45th DRC DG Dato' Mohinder gave an inspiring speech and also challenged the Rotaractors to continue being a Rotarian after their service has ended in Rotaract. This night was followed by an extremely interesting team building game known as 'The Black Market'. Participants were segregated into groups and had to work together to make the most profit. 1st day of DRC ended at 11.30 pm where most participants retired early due to tiredness from traveling. Day 2 of DRC (11th of January 2014) started off with an early breakfast at 7.00 am. Then came the highlight of the 45th DRC which was the Heritage Trail. Since the 45th DRC was carried out in Penang and the theme was 'Penang Heritage', we had decided to let the participants experience the beauty & uniqueness of Penang first hand. The Heritage Trail was a specially designed team building game that required the participants to travel in groups from one station to another. What makes it unique is that when a participant reaches the particular station, they will have to perform certain task which is closely related to the landmark. The participants started their journey at 8.30 am via bus to their first station. There were a total of 10 stations involved throughout the Heritage Trail and the participants had to go through them all. One of it was the Mahamariamman temple (oldest Hindu temple in Penang) where the participants had to identify the weapons of the Hindu deities. There was also garland and joss stick maker station where girls were thought on how to make a garland of Jasmine flowers while the guys got to learn how to make joss sticks from an uncle who had 60 years experience in making joss sticks. At the Goddess of Mercy temple station, participants were suppose to observe the postures of the deities in there and demonstrate it to the game masters while at the St. George's Church (oldest Anglican church in Southeast Asia) station, participants were requested to perform a series of jumping shots to move on to the next station. Lunch was served at Sentral College Hall where the participants had a 360 bird's eye view of the whole of Georgetown. After lunch, participants proceeded to the next half of the Heritage Trail. At the Friendship park station, participants played a team battle game known as Galak Panjang while at the Odeon T-junction station (used to have a Trem line) participants had to arrange a puzzle where the clue can be found on some memorial plaque at the station. We also had stations at Little India station where the participants to make purchases using only Tamil. At the RAC Penang Page 17 of 18

famous Chowrasta market, participants were asked to read out fluently a text regarding Rotaract in different foreign languages. Finally, the last station was the famous Cendol station where participants had a team battle to see who can obtain the most 'correct answers' in a series of Rotaract & general knowledge question. Upon completing the task, each participant was rewarded with a mouth-watering Cendol. After completing the Heritage Trail, everyone headed back to the hotel to prepare for the grand pool side dinner at night. The grand pool side dinner started at 8pm where everyone had their buffet dinner accompanied with live performance by Rotarators from various clubs. There was also a 'Couple of the Night' game where 3 couples compete among each other in terms of cat walk and dancing. During the dinner itself, the winners of the Heritage Trail was announced. The group with 3rd placing walked away with a set of mini speakers each while the runner-up got a 8GB Toshiba pendrive each. The winner of the Heritage Trail was group B where everyone in the group got a 16GB Toshiba pendrive as the prize. The dinner ended at 10.30 but for we Rotaractors, the fellowship was only just about to begin. 12th January 2014 marked the third and last day of the 45th DRC. The day started with a session by the guest speaker, Rotarian Stephen Soon who shared with everyone on the career of an Auctioneer. It was a very interesting talk as most of the participants had never come across a person who's occupation is an auctioneer. This was followed by a sharing session by a speaker from Youths Today who spoke on 'Why Youths should chase and never give up their dreams'. The talk inspired many to not give up on their dreams and continue pursuing it. Finally, it was time for the closing ceremony. District Rotaract Representative Kwong Chiew Ee gave her closing remarks and thanked the organizer for the great job of organizing the conference before hitting the bell to mark the end of the 45th District Rotaract Conference. Everyone adjourned for lunch before saying their goodbyes. In just a matter of 3 short days, the 45th District Rotaract Conference had come to an end. However, we were all very happy and satisfied despite of the tiredness because of the wonderful feedbacks that the participants had given us. Knowing that the participants had a memorable conference at Penang, we as the organizers have only smiles on our faces because we know that all those sleepless nights had finally paid off.
