This includes defined opportunities to advance across health care systems, a defined career pathway. We Meeting Schedule & Support Group 6 Peer/Consumer Support Groups and Resources 7 are excited to announce the graduation of the first Family Support Specialist (FSS) pilot training cohort on June 8, 2015. The 21 students completed twice per week evening and Saturday classes consisting of 20 classes over 70 hours. The classes were taught by Anita Fisher, Sarah Hancock, with Rosalind Corbett covering several topics. Continued on page 3

Peer To Peer Program Would you: Like to learn more about your mental illness? Benefit by being around others that know what it s like living with mental illness? Be interested in developing a Relapse Prevention Plan? Peer to Peer is a FREE educational course for any individual (18 years and older) living with mental illness who is interested in establishing and/or maintaining their wellness and recovery. Each session is two hours in length and continues for ten complete sessions. The course uses a combination of lecture, interactive experience and structured group processes,. The course is guided by two trained mentors and a resource volunteers who are themselves experienced at living well with mental illness. Confidential information, guidance, and referrals. FSS Graduation Continued The topics taught by Rosalind include Trauma Informed Systems, Motivational Interviewing, and Cultural Competency. Anita and Sarah covered topics of Working with Families, The Recovery Model, Problem Solving, Communication Skills, HIPAA/ Ethics/ Professional Boundaries, to name a few. The graduates of the course will have assistance with Career Planning for positions paid or volunteer in the Behavioral Health System. The curriculum is currently being reviewed by Alliant International University to meet college academic level in hopes it will become a statewide certification curriculum. All Volunteer Meeting and Potluck Sdf On Wednesday, June 3rd, over 20 volunteers from assorted NAMI San Diego programs including Helpline, Friends in the Lobby, and In Our Own Voice came together with the Community Development team to share food, stories and ideas for the future. Highlights included: Introducing volunteers to NAMI San Diego s new Outreach Programs Manager Suzette Southfox. We are so excited to have Suzette on board! Hearing from Lisa Hurley of Disability Rights California about Reducing Stigma & Discrimination with some added insight on housing and employment. NAMI Air What is Air? AIR (Anonymous. Inspiring. Relatable) is the new NAMI app, a free, mobile-based social network designed for individuals living with mental health conditions and their family members/caregivers. NAMI AIR is intended to provide another way for people to find and give support, to connect with others through smart phone and computer tablet. AIR encourages users to anonymously share their stories and receive feedback in the form of social interactions such as like, hug and me too. Also allows users to access information on how to get help, learn more about 4 N A M I S A N D I E G O NAMI and connect with the NAMI Helpline. AIR facilitates personal connections with others who may be going through, or have been through, similar situations. Users are anonymous but not alone. How do you start using NAMI AIR? After AIR is downloaded through the Apple and Android App Stores, you will start by creating an account and selecting a group to join. All posts are completely anonymous. This passed fiscal year we were at 35 resources fairs servicing more than 4,000 people county wide. The most recent resource fair opportunities include Operation Engage America which allowed service members to access mental health resources as well as the Mental Health Ministry event offering education about mental health resources to over 20 different faith based organizations. Tech CAFÉ We are a new project funded by the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency through the Mental Health Services Act. Our goal is the creation and expansion of opportunities for uses of technology and strategies which support culturally competent recovery and resilience. The services are provided to existing consumers if the Behavioral Health Services system. The project was aligned under the MHSA Capital Facilities and Technology Needs plan, and is called the Consumer and Family Empowerment Technology Project, also know as the NAMI San Diego Tech CAFÉ.
