Wyoming Recycling Directory 2009 2010

The Wyoming Recycling Directory was prepared with Stripper Well Funds under grant number NT43207. Prepared by Peak Environmental Management, Inc. P. O. Box 404 Green River, Wyoming 82935 307-875-2893 under contract to Wyoming Business Council Mineral, Energy, and Transportation Division Federal Energy Programs 214 West 15 th Street Cheyenne, Wyoming 82002 307-777-2824 Additional copies of this directory can be obtained by contacting: Wyoming Business Council Mineral, Energy, and Transportation Division Federal Energy Programs 307-777-2824 Sherry.Hughes@Wybusiness.Org The Wyoming Recycling Directory is also available on the Internet by accessing the Wyoming Business Council Web site at: http://www.wyomingbusiness.org/business/energy.aspx and scroll down to find the most recent version of the Wyoming Recycling Directory or the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality Web site at: http://deq.state.wy.us/shwd/recycling/ and scroll down to find the most recent version of the Wyoming Recycling Directory. Duplication or quotation of material in this publication is welcome if credit is given to: Wyoming Business Council Mineral, Energy, and Transportation Division Federal Energy Programs and to Peak Environmental Management, Inc. I

Directory Updates This directory will be updated as state funds are available. Every effort was made to contact profit and not-for-profit recycling centers in Wyoming. Any errors or omissions are unintentional. A form (which may be copied) is provided in this directory for revisions, additions of new organizations, recycling centers, and businesses which utilize recyclable waste to produce saleable materials. Updated information should be directed to: Peak Environmental Management, Inc. P. O. Box 404 Green River, Wyoming 82935 307-875-2893 FAX 307-875-5179 Email: myra@peakenvironmental.com Goals of this directory are to provide information to the public and private sectors and the general public, to improve economic development in recycling operations, and to enhance natural resource management. Inquiries and Information Prior to delivering recyclables to a center, the center should be contacted to determine current hours, location, accepted materials, or packaging requirements. Each recycling center adjusts in response to market conditions. General inquiries and information requests regarding recycling should be directed to community contacts, public interest organizations, local recycling centers, or the following: Wyoming Business Council Mineral, Energy, and Transportation Division 214 West 15 th Street Cheyenne, Wyoming 82002 307-777-2824 FAX 307-777-2935 Email: Sherry.Hughes@Wybusiness.Org Recyclables' Value Since the value of many recyclables and the cost of handling and transportation to end-markets are substantial, most centers do not pay money for items such as glass or plastic. Some centers pay for aluminum and ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Centers should be contacted to determine if any money is paid for accepted materials. Preparation and Packaging of Recyclables Each type of material must be separated, e.g. glass cannot be combined with aluminum, and materials should be deposited in appropriate containers. Each center has specific preparation and packaging requirements which are based on quality control requirements established by the purchaser of the recyclables and by quality standards for end products. Although general guidelines are listed, the individual center should be contacted regarding preparations and packaging. Telephone Books: Look in your new telephone book for information about recycling your old one. Telephone books are usually collected for recycling during only the two months of the year following distribution of your new books. Rechargeable Batteries and Cell Phones: Due to the numerous locations available to recycle rechargeable batteries and cell phones, they are not listed individually in this Directory. Go to www.rbrc.org or www.gooddeedfoundation.org/aarp or recyclewirelessphones.com to find the closest store for battery and cell phone recycling. E-waste is electronics waste. Some facilities charge a fee for disposal and some do not. Patrons should contact the center regarding preparation details and costs in advance of disposal. ii

Vehicle batteries: Stores which sell batteries are required by law to accept one battery for each one purchased. Some stores will accept additional batteries, and some battery dealers will pay a small amount for batteries. All battery dealers have not been listed due to the large number of stores which accept batteries. Used motor oil: Used oil may be accepted by some service stations and occasionally for a fee since the station may be charged for used oil collection. Some municipal maintenance operations also accept used motor oil and may also charge a fee depending on the quantity disposed. Used motor oil must not be mixed with other vehicle fluids. Used motor oil should not be deposited after hours at any location. Newspapers: Some centers require that newspapers be bagged or tied with string. Office paper and office pack: Paper clips and, in some cases, staples should also be removed. Glossy and glue bound publications should not be included with office paper or newspapers. Envelopes and "junk mail" should not be included unless specified. Self-adhesive labels (labels which are not water soluble) should be removed from office paper and office pack. Materials which are acceptable for office pack vary from center to center. Check with local recyclers to determine which paper products they will accept and how materials should be separated and packaged. Corrugated cardboard: Cardboard must be corrugated, clean, and free of debris. Flat, gray cardboard: The few centers which accept gray, flat cardboard (e.g., cereal boxes) require that it be clean and free of food and other debris. Glass: Glass beverage and food containers should be rinsed and clean of food or other material. Labels are acceptable. Window glass, mirrors, and drinking glasses cannot be accepted. Metal and plastic lids and metal rings must be removed. Most centers require separation of glass by color.»»note: Many centers cannot accept green or blue glass.««aluminum: Aluminum cans should be free of debris and liquid. At most centers, scrap aluminum should be separated from aluminum cans. Scrap aluminum such as aluminum doors and aluminum lawn chairs are accepted by most scrap metal recyclers. Plastics: Plastics must be clean, dry, and of the specific type accepted by the center. Some centers accept only natural (clear or white) plastics and cannot accept colored plastic containers. Some centers also have limitations about accepting plastic containers which may have been used for motor oil or vegetable oil. The Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) has developed this voluntary plastic container coding system that must be referenced prior to taking plastics to a recycling center: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 PET HDPE Polyethylene High-Density Terephthalate Polyethylene PVC Polyvinyl Chloride LDPE Low-Density Polyethylene PP Polypropylene PS Polystyrene Other All Other Resins and Layered Multi- Material iii
