Statement of Need: Severe hypertension in pregnancy, obstetric embolism and hemorrhage are the three leading causes of maternal mortality. Children, families and obstetric health care teams are all impacted by maternal mortality and reducing maternal death is one of our key priorities as is improving outcomes for the newborns of these mothers. This CME program is designed to teach perinatal practitioners who manage high risk issues to utilize evidence-based principles in the delivery of high quality safe patient care. Through interactive workshops, discussion, and lectures, the program will address ACOG and NYSDOH Safe Motherhood initiative recommendations; early recognition of critical care situations and application of the rapid response approach; diagnosis and treatment strategies for severe hypertension during pregnancy and peripartum; promotion of multidisciplinary care for patients with co-morbidities; and awareness of resources to help those affected by adverse maternal/neonatal outcomes. Program Objectives: All North Shore-LIJ Health System CME activities are intended to improve patient care. At the conclusion of the conference, the participants should be able to: ASSESS the risk of VTE during pregnancy and immediate post partum period DISCUSS how abnormal maternal and neonate lab values relate to the risk of increased bleeding and /or clotting problems DESCRIBE how multiple factors (history, symptoms, lab values) must be assessed to determine maternal and neonate bleeding phenotype RECOGNIZE the risk of antepartum and postpartum pre-eclampsia DEFINE the new classification of hypertension in pregnancy IDENTIFY the effects of maternal pre-eclampsia on the newborn SCREEN for long-term sequelae of maternal pre-eclampsia in the newborn INTEGRATE clinical algorithms into the management of obstetrical hemorrhage IMPROVE coordination of care among members of the health care team DEFINE the unique emotional challenges faced by women who carry to term babies identifed prenatally as having conditions incompatible with life Target Audience: Emergency Medicine Physicians, Gynecologists, Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists, Neonatologists, Obstetricians, Pediatricians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Certified Nurse Midwives, Obstetrical, Neonatal and Pediatric Fellows and Residents.
