Mrs. Mehlmann and I would like to help Elkhorn schools explore the idea of an active classroom through the use of standing desks in her fifth grade classroom. We have noticed the need to students to move during instruction and independent classroom work time. What better way to provide students with an opportunity to do so than with a standing desk! We would like to begin exploring the benefits to standing desks for elementary students by beginning with five in Mrs. Mehlmann's classroom. The IXL Language Arts program focuses on a variety of skills for students to help us reach our building wide smart goal in the area of writing. Teachers also love IXL because they can see their students' progress immediately. Struggling readers will feel a sense of pride when they are able to independently read books and receive the same reading experiences as their peers. Playaways can also help challenge and motivate higher level readers with more advanced texts. These files can then be reviewed any time during the lesson. The purpose of this project is to provide more methods to easily make resources accessible. This technology allows students to share work examples, diagrams, reflections with the entire class by placing the document under the camera. It can also be used as an accommodation for students with visual impairments. One feature allows the teacher to enlarge the object that is placed on the document camera. The books in the Arbor View book room allow all school staff to select appropriate guided reading books to differentiate reading instruction for all students. Classroom teachers use the leveled guided reading books to provide additional reading opportunities for their students as well as to provide more challenging or more basic reading practice to meet their students' needs. The special education staff and reading specialist select the appropriate levels of guided reading books for each of their students in order to provide instruction at each student's instructional level. Arbor View has a good start on a collection of books in our book room, but we need additional book sets to ensure that every staff member has the books that are needed for his/her students. This grant would allow us to buy additional guided reading book sets at the levels that are used most often in our building so that we can meet the needs of all readers at Arbor View. The theatre production that has been offered at EMS the last seven years has included several different avenues for students to be engaged and involved; not just an acting experience. At EMS, we run a very professional production with students interviewing for crew chief positions. Each chief must also be able to lead a group peers to make the best production possible. This production benefits the district by engaging students who may otherwise not be involved. This also promotes higher order and abstract thought processes. Research demonstrates that students involved in performing arts have better attendance and perform better academically and socially. This year, we did numerous trial runs and used it for my 3rd grade reading and math curriculum. The songs really match curriculum and skills being taught in subject areas. I used it many times when teaching my struggling readers. The raps include the following skills: using context clues, main idea and details, and author s purpose are just a few that were played on a regular basis. The program offers a weekly rap of current events, as well as a packet of activities for the students to complete using vocabulary words. The students look forward to this every day and were disappointed when my trial had ended. There are Math, Language Arts, Vocabulary, Science, and Social Studies videos that align to our district curriculum. We would use this program across the curriculum. The membership is $96.00 for a teacher or $2000 for school wide membership. Manchester K 5 teachers are requesting to implement the use of Flocabulary into their instruction.
