Classroom Grant Application : Entry # 121 Application Deadline Name of Proposed Grant Project Purple Hands Rally Teacher Submitting Grant Kyle Peterson Teacher Submitting Grant Email kpeterson@epsne.org School(s) benefiting from this grant EGMS Class/Grade Level 6th 8th Curriculum Areas Involved Guidance/Social Skills Number of students to benefit from this grant 625 In one paragraph, describe the classroom grant project and how it will benefit your students Each year Grandview holds a "Purple Hands Rally" in October. This is where we bring awareness to ending violence and bullying in our school and community. We have an assembly where students take a pledge to not use their hands or words for hurting themselves or others. RESPECT also comes out and does a play on bullying for this cause. This is what the grant money would be used for. This benefits our entire school as we bring attention to something important. Students learn better when they feel safe and we believe this helps establish a safe school environment for our students. Through truly individualized learning and assessment, ALEKS delivers a personalized learning path on the exact topics each student is most ready to learn." Manchester will utilize ALEKS as a Tier II intervention during our Intervention & Enrichment period during the school day and during our Foundation sponsored before/after school intervention sessions. Students who meet criteria for Tier II Math Intervention will maximize their learning with ALEKS. It will supplement our Pearson Realize Math program and Tier 1 instruction. This grant will enable us to target individual student needs giving us a layered intervention approach. Activity breaks in the classroom help improve attention, concentration, time on task, behavior and can improve cognitive performance. Physically fit students are likely to have stronger academic performance and tend to have higher attendance and fewer disciplinary problems. Mrs. Mehlmann and I would like to help Elkhorn schools explore the idea of an active classroom through the use of standing desks in her fifth grade classroom. We have noticed the need to students to move during instruction and independent classroom work time. What better way to provide students with an opportunity to do so than with a standing desk! We would like to begin exploring the benefits to standing desks for elementary students by beginning with five in Mrs. Mehlmann's classroom. All students in her classroom would get the opportunity to use one of the desks for a period of time during the 2017 18 school year to explore the benefits for each student. We are especially interested in looking at the benefits for special education students. We would like to order 4 or 5 AlphaBetter Stand Up Desks with Book box and 4 or 5 AlphaBetter Adjustable height stools from Safco. All three conferences; Endangered Species through the Omaha Zoo, The Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and the International Wolf Center in Ely, MN, will lend support to our Ecology and Human Impact units. For the past three years both the reef and wolf folks have collaborated with me to customize content to my students needs. Students get to hear the same subject matter from another source in a unique way. It works so well that district common assessment tests have been excellent every year. I d like to add a conference available through the Omaha Zoo on endangered species to further the reinforcement of our unit on ecology. Omaha Zoo is one of the premier zoos in the world when it comes to endangered species program. I will still hold two sessions of the Great Barrier Reef on a school night for students and parents because of timezone differences. Parents are invited to all video conferences with the majority attending the Great Barrier Reef presentations. I continually receive many positive emails from attending parents giving high marks to the education their students receive through these programs. =print entry&fid=1&lid=0&page_break=1&filter=&s=&field_id=&operator= 27/275

The books in the Arbor View book room allow all school staff to select appropriate guided reading books to differentiate reading instruction for all students. Classroom teachers use the leveled guided reading books to provide additional reading opportunities for their students as well as to provide more challenging or more basic reading practice to meet their students' needs. The special education staff and reading specialist select the appropriate levels of guided reading books for each of their students in order to provide instruction at each student's instructional level. Arbor View has a good start on a collection of books in our book room, but we need additional book sets to ensure that every staff member has the books that are needed for his/her students. Many children need an activity that makes them feel connected to their the school. The theatre production that has been offered at EMS the last seven years has included several different avenues for students to be engaged and involved; not just an acting experience. At EMS, we run a very professional production with students interviewing for crew chief positions. Each chief must also be able to lead a group peers to make the best production possible. This production benefits the district by engaging students who may otherwise not be involved. This also promotes higher order and abstract thought processes. Research demonstrates that students involved in performing arts have better attendance and perform better academically and socially. We believe the play production is needed in the Elkhorn district at the middle school level and have been so thankful of the Foundation for their continued support of our students. =print entry&fid=1&lid=0&page_break=1&filter=&s=&field_id=&operator= 45/275

This year, we did numerous trial runs and used it for my 3rd grade reading and math curriculum. The songs really match curriculum and skills being taught in subject areas. I used it many times when teaching my struggling readers. The raps include the following skills: using context clues, main idea and details, and author s purpose are just a few that were played on a regular basis. The program offers a weekly rap of current events, as well as a packet of activities for the students to complete using vocabulary words. The students look forward to this every day and were disappointed when my trial had ended. There are Math, Language Arts, Vocabulary, Science, and Social Studies videos that align to our district curriculum. We would use this program across the curriculum.
