ISAPN Region 2 April 2011 Newsletter Page 3 Excerpt from letter I received: TheNationalYouthLeadershipForumonMedicine (NYLF/MED)introducesoutstandinghighschool studentstotheworldofmedicine.this10day programfamiliarizesstudentswithprofessionalsfrom someofthenation stopmedicalcentersandfaculty fromrenownedinstitutionsoflearning.. I am looking for someone to speak at the NYLF/MED Healthcare in the 21 st Century event. Last year I had an awesome experience when I spoke at this event. On behalf of the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine, I would like to invite you to speak to a group of high-achieving high school students interested in pursuing a career in medicine. Specifically, we invite your participation for the Healthcare in the 21 st Century event on either of the dates listed below at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Healthcare in the 21 st Century provides the students at the Forum with the unique opportunity to learn about different career options within the field of medicine while focusing on the modern practitioner and the successes and difficulties they face. Past speakers have ranged from child life specialists to practitioners of Chinese medicine to dentists and forensic scientists. You can choose to speak at one or both events. It is an informal environment. I told them my story, and then about life as an APN. It was great to hear that most of the students had heard of APNs, specifically NPs. It was a great opportunity to influence young minds! If you are interested, please let me know ASAP! If you want to pair up with a colleague, I am sure that would be fine. Let s not let this opportunity slide by! ~Mary Barton The dates for Healthcare in the 21 st Century at the University of Illinois at Chicago are as follows: Forum I: Monday, June 27, 2011 Forum II: Monday, July 11, 2011 The event begins with a brief reception at 6:45pm. Afterward, the session will last one hour and is structured as an open discussion with 25-35 students. The session will end at 8:15 p.m., but the impression you leave on the scholars will extend well beyond the event. Boot Camp Boot Camp is a one-day program designed to provide graduating APN students with practical information to help them get started in their practice. Participants receive information not covered in school, giving them a "leg up" upon graduation. It really is a must-attend for APNs nearing graduation or even practicing APNs who are considering a career change! The last Boot Camp was held Saturday, April 10, 2010 in Arlington Heights at Northwest Community Hospital - with almost 100 attendees. The next one is: Saturday, April 30, 2011, Advocate Christ Hospital, Oak Lawn Register at: www.isapn.org Registration fees are $100. What topics are covered? Transitioning from RN to APN Interviewing Skills Contract Formation and Negotiation Malpractice Issues Reimbursement 101 The Nurse Practice Act You will receive 7 contact hours.

Page 4 Region 2 Vice-Chairs Region 2 consists of the counties of: Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake and McHenry. Cook County Jean Ridgeway Raechael Ferry-Rooney Maria Derylo Lake County Sandi Motisi Schlechter Deborah Karas McHenry County Katherine Lechner ISAPN Region 2 April 2011 Newsletter Region 2 has the greatest number of members, while geographically it is one of the smallest. In order to accommodate the membership, individuals willing to serve in the capacity as Vice-Chairs in DuPage and Kane Counties are still greatly needed. These individuals would be providing assistance with securing sponsors for programs, attending functions the Chair is unable to attend, and contribute toward meeting the various needs of our membership. Interested parties, please contact Mary Barton, at mary@bartonnet.org or 630.408.1389. 2011-2012 Meeting Information Information regarding ISAPN Region 2 Meetings is distributed via ISAPN e-mail. There is a great deal of effort that goes into the planning and coordination of our meetings. The Region Chair and Vice Chairs have meetings throughout Region 2 which consist of 5 counties. Meetings are held on a rotating basis on the three most feasible days - Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Meetings typically begin at 6:30 pm and every attempt is made to wrap them up by 9:00 pm. Upon arrival to the meeting, please sign in and fill out a name tag. The evening typically begins with a meet and greet, followed by a meal, a speaker and usually concludes with ISAPN business. If you have any ideas regarding the meeting whether it be suggestions for a speaker or a pharmaceutical company interested in sponsoring a meeting; or even a new location, please contact Mary Barton at mary@bartonnet.org. Our meetings have become quite popular and on occasion space is limited. Please RSVP as soon as possible or by the designated date to reserve your seat. Typically RSVPs are to the Region Chairperson. Feel free to invite students and APN colleagues to join you/us. They ll thank you for the opportunity! When you RSVP to a meeting, your name is added to an Excel spreadsheet and an acknowledgement that you have RSVP d is sent to you. It is EXTREMELY important that you receive acknowledgement of your RSVP as that ensures your seat at the meeting. If you do not receive acknowledgement, please call, text, or send an email so proper accommodations can be made. Life happens and plans change; so please keep us posted of any changes. Thank you.
