North Lyon County Fire Protection District PER DIEM PARAMEDIC/FIREFIGHTER Job Description
THE POSITION This position is part time, limited term, located in the jurisdiction of North Lyon County Fire Protection District, Fernley Nevada. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: performing a variety of tasks while engaged in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires, in responding to emergency medical calls, extricating and rescuing individuals from fires and entrapment, treating the sick and injured, operation and maintenance of fire department equipment, apparatus and quarters. This position requires evening and weekend duties which will be performed at various locations within the District. Additional duties as assigned. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The applicant should have demonstrated experience, skills and characteristics which include, but not limited to: Performs the necessary tasks associated within the certified level of EMT-Paramedic, such as taking blood pressures, administering oxygen, performing CPR, reading and interpreting EKG, medication administration, advanced airway procedures, all State approved advanced skills and must maintain all required certifications Responds to fire alarms, operates pumps, auxiliary equipment, fire hose, ladders, extinguishers, tools, hose lines and other related equipment Able to work in confined spaces and wearing a self contained breathing apparatus Ventilates burning buildings by opening windows, skylights and/or using power equipment Removes persons from hazardous environments, administers first aid to injured persons, performs salvage operations Responds to vehicle accident scenes and performs extrication techniques using specialized heavy hydraulic equipment during emergency situations Attends fire and medical training sessions as required by the Fire Chief Attends training courses, reads and applies assigned materials related to emergency medical care, firefighting and fire prevention Performs general maintenance work in the up-keep of fire department equipment and property Accurately maintains and completes all required paperwork and documentation Follows and relays instructions and information accurately Assists with fire inspections and medical training as directed
Works with, supports and participates with Volunteer members of the department in a cohesive team environment Performs additional duties as assigned KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS Knowledge of Advanced Life Support Skills and procedures including, but not limited to administering intravenous solutions, Endotracheal intubation, drug administration and defibrillation Performs accurate and complete physical assessments Accurately reports information to Base Hospitals, and Physicians Safely operates emergency vehicles in accordance with State and local Statutes Ability to utilize emergency medical equipment in a proficient manner, communicate concisely, clearly and effectively in both written and verbal form Establishes and maintains a cooperative working relationship with those contacted during the course of work both within the department and the community Knowledge of the tactics, principles, practices and procedures of basic firefighting, the incident command system, hazardous materials and rescue response Ability to analyze firefighting, hazardous materials incidents and rescue situations and adopt safe, effective courses of action Knowledge of all applicable rules, regulations and operational procedures of the North Lyon Fire District Ability to act in accordance with State and Federal laws, regulations, operational procedures, policies and statutes WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed under the following conditions. Majority of time spent in fire station. Work in an emergency firefighting environment. Work in medical emergency situations, including vehicle accidents, swift water rescues, mountain rescues and other types of medical and rescue emergencies. Work in intense life-threatening conditions; exposure to fire, smoke, bodily fluids, swift water, heights, and noise. Risk of death or injury from sudden cave-ins of floors, toppling walls, traffic accidents when responding to calls. May come in contact with poisonous, flammable, or explosive gases and chemicals, as well as radioactive or other hazardous materials that may have immediate or long-term effects on health.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS The physical and mental requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Strength, stamina, and agility to utilize fire suppression equipment for long periods of time. Strength and stamina to fight fires while wearing heavy protective clothing and self contained breathing apparatus. Frequent lifting and/or moving of objects up to 30 pounds and occasional moving of objects up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Physical fitness must be maintained to perform a variety of maintenance duties as well as rescue and firefighting activities. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Must possess the following at time of appointment and for continued employment: Current valid certification as an EMT-Paramedic CPR and ACLS Certification Firefighter 1 Certification Valid Class C drivers license C-PAT Fitness Exam SPECIAL CONDITIONS All candidates being considered for a position with the NLCFPD will be required to submit to an extensive background investigation, physical exam and drug screen. The applicant shall be certified within 12 months: NWCG Red-Card certification NIMS ICS 100-200-700-800 S-190 Basic Wildland Behavior North Lyon Fire Driver Operator Course BENEFITS This classification is a non-benefitted position. The District provides workers compensation insurance in accordance with Nevada State Law.
