Important steps: 1. Find schools/colleges that interest you. Start the application process and research their financial aid information. Most schools will have the information online or in a brochure that you can request to be mailed to you for free. 2. Complete the FAFSA (Federal Application for Student Aid) www.fafsa.ed.gov You must complete your 2013 taxes before you can complete the FAFSA. 3. Apply for local and national scholarships. Most of the local scholarships will be listed in the guide or on our guidance website. Applications are available in the guidance office. Pay careful attention to deadlines and instructions. Each scholarship will have a variety of different requirements. 4. All students should create an account on CFWV (College Foundation of West Virginia) www.cfwv.com. This website is a fantastic resource for career planning, interest inventories, college searches, and scholarships. There are over a million scholarships available to West Virginia students that can be accessed from this site. It has an easy to use search feature to help you narrow down the information that is most relevant to you. Note: Promise Scholarship application is through this website. *This guide has been prepared for you to help you gain access to resources that can help you with funding for college. The scholarships listed here are only a portion of what is available nationwide. For updates and listings of 3

additional scholarships, visit our county website. Click on schools, Hampshire High School, School Counselors. There will be a link to Scholarships on this page. FAFSA Info Deadline s: March 1 st, 2014(Promise & Priority Consideration) April 15, 2014 (WVHE Grant Program Priority Consideration) Financial Assistance Available from filling out the FAFSA: GRANTS: Federal Pell Grant A Federal Pell Grant, unlike a loan, does not have to be repaid. Pell Grants are awarded usually only to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's or a professional degree. (In some cases, however, a student enrolled in a post-baccalaureate teacher certification program might receive a Pell Grant.) Pell Grants are considered a foundation of federal financial aid, to which aid from other federal and nonfederal sources might be added. TEACH Grant Program Through the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007, Congress created the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program that provides grants of up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families. If, 4

after reading all of the information on this fact sheet, you are interested in learning more about the TEACH Grant Program, you should contact the financial aid office at the college where you will be enrolled. Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) program is for undergraduates with exceptional financial need. Pell Grant recipients with the lowest expected family contributions (EFCs) will be considered first for a FSEOG. Just like Pell Grants, the FSEOG does not have to be repaid. Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) The Academic Competitiveness Grant was made available for the first time for the 2006-2007 school year for first-year college students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2006, and for second-year college students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2005. Institutional Grants There are other grants in addition to ours. Colleges provide institutional grants to help make up the difference between college costs and what a family can be expected to contribute through income, savings, loans, and student earnings. Other institutional grants, known as merit awards or merit scholarships, are awarded on the basis of academic achievement. Some merit awards are offered only to students whose families demonstrate financial need; others are awarded without regard to a family's finances. 5

Some grants come with special privileges or obligations. You'll want to find out about the types of grants awarded by each college you are considering. Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant Beginning with the 2010-11 award year, a student who is not eligible for a Pell Grant but whose parent or guardian was a member of the U.S. Armed Forces and died as a result of service performed in Iraq or Afghanistan after September 11, 2001 may be eligible to receive the Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant. LOANS: Direct Stafford Loans Direct Stafford Loans, from the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program, are low-interest loans for eligible students to help cover the cost of higher education at a four-year college or university, community college, or trade, career, or technical school. Eligible students borrow directly from the U.S. Department of Education (the Department) at participating schools. Direct Stafford Loans include the following types of loans: Direct Subsidized Loans Direct Subsidized Loans are for students with financial need. Your school will review the results of your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA SM ) and determine the amount you can borrow. You are not charged interest while you re in school at least halftime and during grace periods and deferment periods. Direct Unsubsidized Loans You are not required to demonstrate financial need to receive a Direct Unsubsidized 6

Loan. Like subsidized loans, your school will determine the amount you can borrow. Interest accrues (accumulates) on an unsubsidized loan from the time it s first paid out. You can pay the interest while you are in school and during grace periods and deferment or forbearance periods, or you can allow it to accrue and be capitalized (that is, added to the principal amount of your loan). If you choose not to pay the interest as it accrues, this will increase the total amount you have to repay because you will be charged interest on a higher principal amount. Direct PLUS Loans for Parents Parents of dependent students may apply for a Direct PLUS Loan to help pay their child's education expenses as long as certain eligibility requirements are met. Graduate and professional students may apply for PLUS Loans for their own expenses. WORK PROGRAMS : Federal College Work-Study The Federal College Work- Study Program provides jobs for undergraduates and graduate students who need financial aid. The institutional aid office may assign recipients to employment on campus or with non-profit public and private agencies. The aid officer determines eligibility for work-study assistance and the amount each student may earn under this program. A participant will be paid at least the current Federal minimum wage. PROMISE SCHOLARSHIP *Application is online at the CFWV website (https://secure.cfwv.com/ ). 7

The PROMISE scholarship is a merit-based financial aid program, which means students who reach certain academic goals are eligible to receive funds to help pay for college. Eligible 2014 high school graduates will receive annual awards up to $4,750 to cover the cost of tuition and mandatory fees at public or independent institutions in West Virginia Scholarship Eligibility MINIMUM HIGH SCHOOL GRADE POINT AVERAGE REQUIREMENTS COR E CUMULATI VE 3.0 A student must graduate with a minimum 3.0 grade point average, or whatever is locally considered a "B" average, in both the core courses and overall coursework (weighted grades may be used). The core grade point average includes all core courses, but does not include electives. GED/home-schooled students must attain a 2500 minimum score on the GED for scholarship consideration. MINIMUM TEST SCORE REQUIREMENTS ACT (national test only) SAT (reasoning test only) Section Composit e Sco re Section Sco re 22 Combined Score 102 0 English 20 Critical Reading 490 Mathema tics 20 Science 20 Reading 20 Mathematics 480 ACT/SAT scores must be from a national test administration and cannot be combined from multiple test administrations. In addition, the ACT and/or SAT writing portion will not be used in calculating minimum combined scores. Students should also read the complete list of PROMISE Scholarship Eligibility Requirements. This list also outlines eligibility requirements and application procedures for home-schooled students. Timeline for the Class of 201 4 NOVEMBER 1, 201 3 The PROMISE Scholarship Application (Application for State-Level Financial Aid Programs) has been posted on cfwv.com. JANUARY 1, 201 4 8

The 2013-14 FAFSA will be available on www.fafsa.ed.gov. MARCH 1, 201 4: PROMISE Application Students must complete the PROMISE Scholarship Application (Application for State-Level Financial Aid Programs) by this date. Students may use their eighth semester (typically the spring semester of their senior year) grades to achieve PROMISE eligibility (3.0 GPA in the core classes and overall), but must apply by March 1st. In order to be considered for the PROMISE Scholarship, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be received by the Federal Student Aid Processing Center on or before March 1, 2011, and meet the conditions for processing. APRIL 201 4 Initial award letters are mailed to PROMISE Scholars. JUNE 7, 2014: SAT Last date to take the SAT to establish scholarship eligibility (reasoning test only). Scores will not be accepted for any SAT taken after June 7, 2014. JUNE 14, 2014: ACT Last date to take the ACT (national test only) to establish scholarship eligibility. Scores will not be accepted for any ACT taken after June 14, 2014. Renewal Requirements Scholars are not required to reapply to the scholarship yearly. Scholarships are automatically renewed if students meet the renewal requirements at the end of a year of enrollment. Scholars may use subsequent summer sessions at their own cost to obtain GPA and/or credit hour renewal requirements. Eligibility for renewal is determined by the scholar's institution at the end of a year of scholarship utilization, based on first-time semester enrollment. For example: Scholars enrolling in their first semester of college during the fall semester will have the fall, spring, and summer semesters to meet the renewal requirements. Scholars enrolling in their first semester of college during the spring semester are considered "off track" and will have the spring, summer and fall semesters to meet renewal requirements. GPA: First year scholarship recipients must maintain an overall GPA of a 2.75 at the end of their first year of scholarship utilization. Thereafter, an overall GPA of 3.0 is required for renewal. Hours: A minimum of 30 credit hours must be obtained in a year of enrollment for renewal. Any college credits earned prior to the first semester of enrollment are not considered when determining the student's eligibility for renewal of the scholarship. Only credits and grades earned beginning with the first semester of college enrollment after high school graduation will count when determining renewal eligibility. 9

Please remember that students who lose their PROMISE scholarship will not be able to regain it at a later time. Students should also read the complete list of renewal requirements for college students. Summer Awards Summer awards are available on a limited basis to students eligible for scholarship continuation at the end of the academic year. For more information, please contact the PROMISE Scholarship Office at (888) 825-5707. Community Service for PROMISE Scholarship Applicants Applicants for PROMISE Scholarship awards are strongly urged to perform at least 20 hours of unpaid community service while in high school and college. The community service may include, but is not limited to, participating with non-profit, governmental, institutional or community-based organizations designed to improve the quality of life for community residents, meet the needs of community residents or foster civic responsibility.
