1. OBJECTIVES OF THE CENTENARY 1. To encourage all sectors of the South African population to give an amount of time to make every day a Mandela Day; 2. To use the Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Centenary Celebration as a vehicle to actively promote social cohesion, nation building and inclusive citizenship; 3. To promote a national identity that celebrates its cultural diversity; 4. To create awareness, through educational programmes, dialogues and public engagements on the importance and relevance of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela s values and legacy; 5. To promote active participation in commemorations and celebrations of national days by all South Africans. 2. PROPOSED YEAR-LONG THEME: BE THE LEGACY The intention of the theme is to foreground characteristics and values for which the former President Nelson Mandela was renowned for, across the world. 3 3

MONTHLY PROGRAMME JANUARY SUB-THEME: Mandela An advocate for education as a foundation for growth and development Storytelling As part of the Read to Lead Campaign, DBE encourages reading and storytelling, in order to improve language acquisition, communication and literacy among learners, a story piece on the life of NR Mandela will be developed and delivered in storytelling activities.. Global Citizens Movement Concert Proposed FNB Stadium Sept Global Citizen Movement Annual Music Event within the G20 Countries is planned to feature Stevie Wonder, Beyonce, Rihanna, Cold Play Rock Band Group, and others. The event will be free as it will be sponsored by private companies and individuals. T & Cs apply Proposal that in, the event be held in SA in September and an announcement will be made soon.
