Overview of Clinical Education Te clinical practicum education coursework elps to integrate te cognitive ("classroom") aspect wit te psycomotor and affective skills required of a student nuclear medicine tecnologist in te Nuclear Medicine Tecnology Program. Clinical education involves tree pases or levels of participation: observation, assistance, and performance*. Te student begins clinical participation by first observing an NMT in te execution of duties. Tis participation moves from a passive mode of observation to a more active mode of assisting te NMT in NM procedures. Te rate at wic te student progresses is dependent upon te ability of te student to compreend and perform te various assigned tasks. As te student gains experience in te various procedures, e/se gradually moves to an independent clinical performance stage. At tis point, te student is actually performing te procedure under te direct supervision of an NMT. "Direct Supervision" means tat te qualified NMT: 1. Reviews te request for te examination in relation to te student's acievement; 2. Evaluates te condition of te patient in relation to te student's acievement; 3. Is present during te performance of procedures; and 4. Reviews and approves imaging results, data manipulation, etc. After demonstrating competence in performing a specific radiograpic procedure, te student may be permitted to perform procedures under indirect supervision. "Indirect Supervision" means tat te qualified NMT reviews, evaluates and approves te procedure as indicated above and is immediately available to assist te student regardless of te level of student acievement. "Immediately available" is interpreted as te presence of a qualified NMT adjacent to te room or location were a NM procedure is being performed. Tis availability applies to all areas were radionuclides and/or radioparmaceuticals are employed. During te Student's clinical practicum education, is/er performance is evaluated, on an on-going basis, by site s Clinical Instructor and/or te supervising NMTs. Te student is evaluated on te specific NMT procedures as outlined in tis Handbook, general competence in performing previously mastered procedures, and te development of teir professional skills. * For more detailed explanation - see Student Supervision under te Clinical Practicum Education section. 27
